After enjoying a successful regular season, the Cornersville golf team saw their 2013 campaign come to an end on Monday, as the Bulldogs finished 10th out of 14 boys teams in the District 11-A-AA tournament, which was held at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, while the Lady Bulldogs came in fifth out of nine girls squads.

"I thought we played well overall. It was a learning experience for the girls and the guys. They all worked hard and made a lot of progress this season," said Cornersville coach Jill McMasters. "I'm optimistic about next year because everyone is coming back. If we can make as much improvement next season as we did this season, we'll be in pretty good shape."

Narrow miss

Taking the four best rounds from five players, the Bulldogs posted a team score of 396 after playing all 18 holes at GreyStone. Junior Tate Lowery narrowly missed earning his second straight at large bid to the Region tournament and shot an 84 to lead the way for CHS. Colby Downs followed Lowery with a 96, while Matthew Karban and J.D. Crabtree both turned in a 108. Blake Calahan tallied a 111 for Cornersville as well.

"I'm happy with Tate's performance. He's been shooting like that all year. He played a practice round up here last week and shot a 91 so he shaved seven shots off his score," said McMasters.

With the top three teams from the District tournament advancing to the Region 6-A-AA tourney, Hickman County took home the first place plaque with a team score of 320. Columbia Academy came in second with a 330, while Montgomery Central finished in third place after notching a 336.

Columbia Academy's Lake Lomax turned in the best round of the day and shot an even par 72 to earn first medalist. Hickman County's Eric Gilbert defeated teammate Cooper Mayes in a playoff to claim second place after both players shot a 74. Both Simmons and Craig also grabbed two of the five at large bids to the Region tournament thanks to their performances on Monday. Creek Wood's Tyler Turpin (79), and Lewis County's Lucas Brewer (80) and Jesse Brewer (80) earned the other three at large bids.

Lady Bulldogs

In the girls tournament, the Lady Bulldogs finished with a team score of 277 after taking the top two rounds from three players. Freshman Emma Reese paced Cornersville with a 134, while Carly Salsman tallied a 143. Ellie Jackson also notched a 171 for CHS.

Lewis County claimed the first place trophy with a team score of 171. Hickman County came in second with a 186, while Waverly finished third with a 192.

Lewis County's Olivia Hinson shot a 79 to earn first medalist honors in the girls tournament. Waverly's Madison Roberts finished in second place with an 89, while Hickman County's Madison Smith came in third with a 91. Lewis County's Calli Anna McDonald defeated Santa Fe's Ashley Dodson in a playoff to win fourth place after both players shot a 92.

Dodson earned a bid to the Region tournament as well, while Montgomery Central's Kayleigh Baggett (99), Fairview's Montana Spicer (106), and Columbia Academy's Madison Dant (109) and Miranda Goats (131) grabbed the other four at large spots.
