The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs saw their modest three-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night when they were defeated 11-1 at home in five innings by District 11-A rival Columbia Academy.
Having defeated Cornersville 3-0 in their previous encounter on April 9, CA (28-9, 6-0 District) got off to a fast start in Friday's contest and scored two runs in the top of the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead.
After CHS left the bases loaded in the first and second innings, Columbia tallied two unearned runs in the top of the third with the help of two Lady Bulldog errors to open up an 4-0 advantage before pushing across four more runs in the fourth to increase their lead to 8-0.
Lone run
Cornersville (6-5, 5-3 District) finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth and trimmed the deficit to 8-1 when Kelsey Wortham scored on a RBI infield single by Makayla Campbell after reaching base on an error and advancing to third on a couple of groundouts by Miranda Cooksey and MandiLynn Calahan.
CA then brought the mercy rule into effect by plating three runs in the top of the fifth to forge an 11-1 advantage before snuffing out a Cornersville scoring threat in the bottom half of the frame to complete the sweep of the regular season series.
Cornersville drew seven walks against CA starting pitcher Shelby Cummins, but mustered just four hits in the contest and left 11 women on base overall, including eight in scoring position, while having another runner thrown out at home plate in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Rogers doubles
Kaitlyn Rogers doubled to account for the Lady Bulldogs lone extra base hit of the contest, while Campbell, Carson Coble, and Wortham all singled.
Hindered by five CHS errors, Cornersville's pitching staff was unable to contain Columbia Academy's powerful offensive attack, as CA finished with 12 hits and three walks against Lady Bulldog starting hurler Taylor Wolaver and reliever Kirsten Young.
"We didn't play clean defense and left too many runners on base," said Cornersville coach Eric Crabtree They're the number two team in the state in single A ball. If you make mistakes against them, they're going to beat you because they capitalize on them."
Cummins and Cristin Jones both tallied three hits and a RBI to pace Columbia Academy at the plate, while Jordan Ellerby added a couple of solo homeruns.
