On a rare Saturday afternoon basketball game in Cornersville, the Collinwood Lady Trojans and the hometown Lady Bulldogs squared off in the 2 p.m. contest.
The Lady Bulldogs struggled against an unbeaten Collinwood squad that nailed 10 three-point baskets and the Lady Trojans rolled to a 61-20 victory.
“We are playing hard and hustling and trying to do what we ask of them,” Cornersville coach Martha Jane McMasters said. “This Collinwood team is a really good team. We have things to work on.”
Collinwood senior Kristen Retherford started the scoring with a jumper from the right side and after a Cornersville miss, Sophie Gobbell got an inside basket to make it 4-0.
Collinwood sophomore A.C. Whitehead then nailed a three-pointer and the visitors were up 7-0 less than a minute into the game.
Cornersville’s Abbie Woodard canned one of two free throws before Alicia Polk found the range for a three-pointer to cut the Collinwood lead to 7-4.
Polk added another basket after a Collinwood miss as she ran the floor and scored on a layup to slice the deficit to one point.
Collinwood turned up the heat with a pressing defense and the Lady Bulldogs struggled moving the ball around to get a shot.
The teams then swapped three-point baskets as Collinwood’s Retherford hit from the corner and Merrihannah Walker answered for Cornersville to make it 10-9.
Collinwood scored on their next three possessions to push the lead to 17-9 as the horn sounded to end the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Collinwood hitting four three-pointers as Whitehead, Retherford, Rihanna McWilliams, and Sophie Gobbell found the bottom of the net from long range.
Woodard scored inside and Alicia Polk popped a jumper for the Lady Bulldogs as they struggled to keep pace.
On a scramble for a loose ball, Polk and Collinwood’s Asia Kelly collided with Polk having to leave the game with blood showing from her upper lip.
Collinwood took advantage of the loss of the Lady Bulldogs’ point guard, upping the defensive pressure and accurate shooting to pull away to a 39-15 lead at the half.
Woodard scored the lone basket after Polk left the game.
Collinwood started the third quarter with a basket by Whitehead and Cornersville’s Payton Salsman nailed a three.
Camille Finch, called on to fill in for Polk at point guard, scored on a drive, but Collinwood continued their assault from beyond the three-point line as they upped their lead to 52-20 as the third quarter ended.
The fourth quarter saw substitutes from both benches getting a lot playing time with Collinwood’s Baylee Harris dropping in the last of the 10 Lady Trojans’ three-pointers.
Cornersville did not score in the final period as the horn sounded on a 61-20 victory for the Lady Trojans, who extended their current winning streak to three games over the Lady Bulldogs and 10-of-17 since 2008.
The Lady Bulldogs are struggling and with Polk’s length of absence unknown at press time, Coach McMasters’ charges, with road games at Hampshire and Mt. Pleasant looming, face a tough task.
