The Cornersville Middle School Bulldogs are still searching for their first win of the season after losing to the Richland Raiders and the Cascade Champions last Thursday and Friday to fall to 0-6 on the year.
CMS dropped a 8-5 road decision to Richland on Thursday before suffering a 15-0 loss at home to Cascade in five innings on Friday night.
On Thursday, the Bulldogs grabbed an early 1-0 lead against Richland by plating a run in the top of the second inning. After Cade Landers singled to lead off the frame, Jayce Derryberry was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Landers then stole third before scoring on a Raider error.
CMS' lead proved to be short lived, as Richland tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the second with the help of two Cornersville errors to tie the game at 1-1, before pushing across four runs in the third inning on a walk, two hits, and two more Bulldog errors to seize a 5-1 advantage.
The Raiders then tacked on another run in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-1, but CMS cut the deficit to 6-3 by crossing home plate twice in the fifth on the strength of singles from Dakota Polk and Zach Blackwell, a Will Vanhooser walk, and a two-run double by starting pitcher Ty Landers.
After leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Richland tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth inning thanks to a hit, a walk, an error, and three passed balls to open up an 8-3 advantage.
Cornersville tallied two runs in the top of the seventh with the aid of two Richland errors and a Ty Landers RBI single for the 8-5 final.
The Bulldogs actually outhit the Raiders 7-3 in the contest, but committed seven errors overall, which contributed to five of the Raiders' eight runs.
"We showed some improvement against Richland, but it was the same stuff that continues to beat us. We just made too many errors at key times," said CMS coach Mike Tatum.
Ty Landers led Cornersville at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI, while Will Vanhooser, Kolbe McMahon, Cade Landers, Polk, and Blackwell each had one hit.
On the mound, Ty Landers was unable to overcome the defensive miscues by the Bulldogs and suffered the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, over four innings on two hits and a walk to go along with six strikeouts.
Things didn't get any easier for Cornersville on Friday, as Cascade raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first inning before pushing across three runs in the second to forge a 13-0 advantage. The Champions then tacked on two more runs in the third inning to cap the scoring in their mercy rule shortened victory.
Bolstered by their first inning onslaught, Cascade outhit the Bulldogs 9-2 overall while also being aided by six Cornersville errors.
Starting pitcher Seth Gardner led the Champions' offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Cody Martin also notched two hits and 3 RBI for Cascade and Hayden Edmondson added a triple and 2 RBI.
Gardner also picked up the victory on the mound and yielded two hits in three scoreless innings of work to go along with two strikeouts..
