The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs were trying to snap a seven-game losing streak against District 8-A foe Cascade Lady Champs, who were hoping to snap a six-game losing streak Tuesday night at Cornersville.

The Lady Champs, paced by 13 points by Lani Jones and 10 points by Kylie Calvert, broke their losing streak and extended Cornersville’s to eight games with a 41-26 victory.

Again, the youth and inexperience of the Lady Bulldogs showed as they are still struggling against pressure defenses and turning the ball over.

“The girls are trying and are staying positive and we are just going to keep on trying,” Cornersville coach Martha Jane McMasters said. “I keep telling the girls to trust the process, because it is a process of them playing more and learning more to play together and trust each other.”

Cornersville was led in the scoring column by Grayson Riner with nine points.

Cascade controlled the opening tipoff, but could not convert and Cornersville had the opportunity to score first, but a turnover sent the ball back to the Lady Champions and Calvert pumped in a basket.

Calvert added another basket and Carmen Ray nailed a 3-pointer to make the score 7-0 before Cornersville’s Gracie Turner scored down low to put the Lady Bulldogs on the board.

Ray added another goal before Meri Hannah Walker’s 3-point shot from the corner pulled the Lady Bulldogs to within four points at 9-5.

Ray dropped in a basket and Calvert added a free throw to wrap up the scoring for the first quarter and the Lady Campions led 12-5.

Abbie Woodard laid the ball in on a nice drive for Cornersville to cut the Cascade lead to 12-7.

Cascade got a basket by Caroline Stone that was followed by a jumper by Riner to make it 14-9.

Riner continued her scoring for the Lady Bulldogs with two baskets, one on a feed by Alicia Polk, but Cascade countered with a basket by Jones.

Riner added a free throw, but when the first half ended Cornersville still trailed by seven points, 21-14.

The third quarter saw Cascade (2-15) stretch its lead as turnovers and poor shooting, inside and outside, plagued the Lady Bulldogs.

When the third quarter horn sounded the Lady Champions had stretched their lead to 18 points as the Lady Bulldogs could only muster four points on baskets by Riner and Polk.

Cornersville began to substitute liberally and Cascade followed suit in the fourth quarter.

Younger players are getting floor time for Cornersville, but the strain of losing will be something that coach McMasters will have to address in the upcoming weeks as the Lady Bulldogs must gear up to meet Santa Fe for Homecoming on Thursday night and the Lady Tigers of Fayetteville City come calling on Friday night.

A tough stretch for the Lady Bulldogs (2-12).
