On Tuesday, the Cornersville Bulldogs scratched another mark in the win column when they beat defending District 11-A regular season champ Mt. Pleasant 6-5 at home to remain undefeated on the year.
The Tigers held a 5-1 lead through the first four and a half innings of play, but the Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0 District) put together a rally in the bottom of the fifth and plated five runs in the frame to seize a 6-5 advantage.
Cornersville then snuffed out a pair of Mt. Pleasant scoring threats over the final two innings to claim their second straight win over the Tigers.
Foes' helping hands
CHS finished with only five hits against three Tiger pitchers, but were aided by five walks and two Mt. Pleasant errors.
First baseman Jacob Griffis doubled and tallied 4 RBI to a lead the Bulldogs offensively, while Dallas Wright, Zach Richards, Cody Blackburn, and Tate Lowery all singled with Wright driving in one run.
Blackburn also picked up the win on the mound for Cornersville and allowed three hits in two scoreless innings of work after starting the game at catcher. Bulldog starting pitcher Jody Sullivan had to settle for the no decision and yielded five runs over five innings on five hits and four walks to go along with four strikeouts.
Vincent Cutrona had three hits to pace the Tigers at the plate, while Leo Cole tallied two hits. Cole Hutcheson also added a double and 3 RBI for Mt. Pleasant. Tiger relief pitcher Wyatt Davis suffered the loss, allowing five runs, only one earned, over one inning on four hits and a walk.
Falling behind
Both teams came up empty through the first three innings of the game before Mt. Pleasant crossed home plate four times in the top of the fourth with the help of a CHS error, a RBI single by Cole, a Hutcheson two-run double, and a RBI sacrifice bunt by Jake Riggins to grab a 4-0 lead.
The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tyler Lowery scored on a sacrifice fly by Griffis after drawing a leadoff walk and advancing to third on a Richards single and a hit batsman.
Mt. Pleasant then plated a run in the top of the fifth thanks to a pair of walks, a Cutrona single, and a sacrifice fly by Hutcheson to open up a 5-1 advantage.
Winning comeback
Cornersville, however, was finally able to string together some hits in the bottom of the fifth and crossed home plate five times in the frame on the strength of a Tate Lowery single, two Tiger errors, a single by Blackburn, a Griffis three-run double, a walk by Neil Davis, a hit batsman, and a Wright RBI single to pull ahead 6-5.
In the top of the sixth, Mt. Pleasant put a runner on second with one out thanks to a leadoff single by Justin Batten and a Jonathan Pike sacrifice bunt, but Blackburn retired the next two Tiger batters on a pair of groundouts to escape the inning unscathed.
After hitting Josh Russell with a pitch to start the top of the seventh inning, Blackburn picked off Russell at first. Cutrona and Cole then delivered consecutive singles to put runners on first and second with one out, but Blackburn fanned Hutcheson before catching a line drive by Wyatt Davis to secure the victory for the Bulldogs.
