Bulldogs extraordinary in sixth straight shutout win

The third-ranked Cornersville Bulldogs are two wins away from a perfect regular season after demolishing Fayetteville 55-0 for their sixth straight shutout win on Homecoming Friday night at Frog Bottom.

“I can’t say enough about my defensive staff coming in,” Cornersville coach Gerard Randolph said. “They had a great game plan this week and we had a great week of preparation.”

“It was very emotional before we came out tonight, knowing this was this group of seniors last homecoming night, so I told them to go out there and have fun, make a statement tonight, and go out on a great note.”

Cornersville scored on an Eli Woodard 57-yard touchdown run on its second play from scrimmage and never looked back as the Bulldogs found the end zone on all five of their first quarter possessions for a 35-0 lead.

“The guys did a great job executing our game plan, whether we are running the ball or throwing the ball” Randolph said. “I’m glad we are able to not be one dimensional and be able to run the ball and throw the ball the way we have is just a great job by the guys up front.”

Fayetteville produced nearly nothing on offense as the Bulldogs’ ‘D’ held the Tigers to a measly 49 total yards, including a goose egg in the passing game.

Senior Ryan Prosser had the game of his life, celebrating his sister Sarah Beth’s crowning as Homecoming Queen by intercepting two Fayetteville passes and scoring a touchdown via a 21-yard hookup from quarterback Henlee Mitchell in the first quarter scoring deluge.

“This night meant a lot to me as the final homecoming for me and my sister as the queen, so I just wanted to come out and play,” Prosser said. “Every week we get ready and prepare not to let anybody score and get our second and third teams in to get some reps.”

The Woodard boys also had a big homecoming night as senior all-state standout Eli and his freshman brother Rhett scored a pair of touchdowns apiece in the contest.

The Bulldogs put up 359 yards on the ground with Eli leading the way with just three carries for 86 yards.

Backup quarterback Jackson Farler rushed the ball four times for 55 yards and threw for another score and Rhett Woodard toted the rock seven times for 48 yards.

Cameron Whitaker continued his stellar senior campaign with five rushes for 46 yards and two touchdowns, while Trenten Warren ran the rock four times for 32 yards and Alex Hillard had 24 yards on five touches.

The huge leads this season are beneficial to the program as many of the underclassmen have gotten valuable playing time in preparation for the future when this graduating class of 17 seniors have moved on.

“It’s priceless, they are getting valuable experience,” Randolph said. “They are getting in early, we are spot playing them, so we are not making mass subs and they are playing with guys that play a ton of minutes and it only helps us out in the long run as far as depth.”

The Bulldogs are two wins away from a perfect regular season and travel to Richland next week in a big rivalry game versus the Raiders before a bye week.

“We talk about one game at a time, one practice at a time, and one rep at a time,” Randolph said. “That’s how we are approaching it, so we are looking for a great week of practice and go over to Richland and win a ballgame.”

Cornersville returns home for the regular season finale versus Huntland on October 19.
