Blowout sends FMS to title game

By game time, the rain was coming down sideways at Murrey E. Holton Field at Chapel Hill, but it didn't faze the FMS Rockets, who stayed focused on finishing out an undefeated regular season.

Forrest started fast and never let up and Middle Tennessee Christian School never knew what hit them as the Rockets blistered the Cougars 52-2.

"We are just playing Forrest Rocket football," FMS coach Chris Benne said. "Rain, sleet, sunshine or snow we are going to try to run this offense and run the football and we did a good job of that tonight."

Title clash ahead

FMS will host Liberty for the Duck River Valley Conference Championship at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at Chapel Hill.

"I am very proud of the guys, we have worked hard, even before I got here the work they put in and the work they put in since I got here." Benne said.

The Rockets handed Liberty its lone loss of the season, defeating the Patriots 37-20 on August 20 at "The Rock".

FMS wasted little time disposing of the Cougars, beginning with a Mason Walls blocked punt that was picked up by Nick McClendon, who ran it back 34 yards for a touchdown.

"We were coming after it and trying to set the tone," Benne said. "It doesn't matter if it raining or not, we are still trying to play out football game and that includes attacking and attacking."

Fast strike

MTCS was forced to punt on its next possession and two plays into the Rockets' next drive, FMS quarterback Joel Burton hooked up with Lofton Yeager for a 33-yard score.

Burton added the 2-point conversion run, making it 14-0 Rockets with 2:56 left in the first quarter.

The rain did not let up and either did the Rockets as Blaize Sweeney made it 20-0 when he ran the ball for a touchdown with 7:15 remaining in the second quarter.

The FMS defense stopped the Cougars cold on their next possession and Burton made them pay again, hooking up with Sweeney for a 20-yard TD.

No letup

Another FMS defensive stop led to a McClendon 15-yard TD scamper with 2:54 left in the half.

Carson Blackwell came up with his third interception of the season at the Cougar 33-yard line and McClendon made it 38-0 on the next play, running to pay dirt.

Four plays later, MTCS punted the ball away and FMS took over at the Cougar 42-yard line with 50 ticks left in the first half.

Mistake---FMS scored again, this time on a Spencer McCown 30-yard run, making it 44-0 at the half.

Second half

McCown added a 35-yard TD run in the second half and Max Kirby picked up a wet ball on the point after and threw to McClendon for the two points.
