Marshall County opened up post-season play on Friday night at Lewisburg against Spring Hill, but despite the Raiders (2-24) having just two wins on the season, one of those wins came against an ultra-competitive Giles County team that beat the Tigers earlier in the season.
The Tigers (16-10) refused to play down to its competition, jumping on the Raiders 21-0 after the first period and holding its Maury County rival to its season-low point total in a 64-26 win.

After taking care of business in a big way against Spring Hill on Friday night in Lewisburg the MCHS Tigers were back on the court the very next night taking on Cascade with a third straight district championship on the line.
The two squads split the regular season matchups, but Saturday night was all Tigers (17-10) as the blue and white led by at least 10 points for the majority of the second half before the Champions (21-7) trimmed the lead in the final minute in the 59-54 win.

The past 15 years, the Marshall County Tigers have won three region championships, three sectional champions, made three trips to the state championships in Murfreesboro, winning three games including a state final appearance in 2001-02 and a state semifinal appearance in 2009-10.
During a four year period (2007-11) the Tigers experienced total district dominance with a 54-2 regular season district record over the span, but in all those years of great Tiger basketball accomplishments one thing Marshall County was never able to claim was a district championship--losing five different times in the final game including the past two seasons against recent league powerhouse Christ Presbyterian Academy.

Lewisburg’s William J. Mitchell’s posthumous induction into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame on April 1 at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro is the final brick in a foundation of a true life legend that will last forever.
TSSAA Executive Director Bernard Childress, a lifelong family friend, Columbia Central High School graduate, and first African American in his position with the TSSAA said, “Mr. Mitchell was a role model without a doubt, an icon in the community and he is very well missed, but he left a legacy for all of us to follow and we are just proud that we are able to induct him into the Hall of Fame.”

There was a time during the past decade the Cornersville basketball team reached unprecedented heights by advancing to three straight region tournaments (2007-09) and even reached the second round in 2008 before bowing out to Moore County.
Since then the Bulldogs (8-15) have experienced hard times, including a winless season in 09-10 and a one win campaign last season, but have bounced back under first-year coach Matt Hagan and came into the district tournament opener on Tuesday night against Grace Christian (7-19) with a chance to advance to the Region 6A Tournament for the first time in eight years.

Forrest seniors Anthony Kritz, Michael Dyer and Luke Cunningham will be playing football together again in college as the Rockets’ trio recently signed Letter of Intents to attend Bethel University at McKenzie next season.
“We were very proud to have three more Forrest Rockets sign scholarships to continue their football careers,” Forrest coach Brent Johns said. “It shows our younger kids that you don’t have to play at a larger school to get a football scholarship. If you are good enough they will eventually find you.”
After the saturation on National Signing Day earlier this month when most of the higher profile players chose their future schools, the second wave of signees got their chance when the smaller schools came calling to fill their rosters.

After a spectacular first day that produced a school record five medalists on Friday, the Forrest Rockets backed it up today with two third place finishes and a sixth spot, while two more Chapel Hill grapplers are still vying for state titles at the TSSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Franklin Ag Expo Center in Franklin.
Forrest’s lone state title in wrestling came in 2013-2014 when Tyler McClendon stormed through the 195-pound weight class.
“I believe we can get a couple more tonight,” Forrest coach Chris Slaughter said. “Coming out and performing in that first match yesterday set the tone and here we are standing in third place (team standings) right now, so this has been a pretty exciting weekend.”

One of the harder things to do in the game of basketball is to beat an opponent three times in one season and that was exactly the scenario before the Forrest Rockets (6-24) took on Moore County (3-23) in Saturday’s District 9A play-in game at Huntland.
Forrest fans experienced a Deja vu of sorts as the Raiders bounced the Rockets out of the tournament for the second straight season by way of two Clay Burnett free throws with two seconds left for a 42-40 loss.
"We weren't focused enough on the boards and we weren't focused enough on taking care of the ball," Forrest coach Randy Toombs said. "That's the one thing we've had issues with the entire season is taking care of the ball."
"We got caught standing and watching," Toombs added. "They out hustled us. They got the win."

The Forrest Lady Rockets let the host Lady Hornets off the hook in the second District 9A Tournament semifinal game Thursday night at Huntland, losing 50-42.
“I think playing them at their place with a packed house against us gave them the advantage, but we still had some shots that we usually make not fall,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “It was a great atmosphere to play in.”
With the loss, Forrest plays Community in the consolation game on Saturday before hitting the road for the first-round of the Region 6A Tournament next week versus an undermined opponent from District 10A, which plays its semifinals tonight.

The Marshall County Tigerettes traveled shorthanded to Page Tuesday night for an important District 12AA contest and the lack of depth cost Lewisburg in a 43-21 defeat.
Starting guard Demariae Ingram suffered a broken collarbone at Spring Hill last week and forward Sydne Solomon injured her knee.
Both players are out for the remainder of the basketball season, but Solomon is hopeful to come back for the start of the softball season in April.
“It’s a big adjustment for us and it’s going to hurt,” Marshall County coach David Steely said. “But people have to step up and play a little better.”
Without the two players, Steely was forced to mix some roles up on the team and Page took advantage of Marshall County’s misfortune to claim the Senior Night win at Rudderville.

The Cornersville Bulldogs closed the regular season the same way it started the 2016-17 campaign--with a matchup against future district opponent Eagleville.
And unlike the first game in which the Bulldogs found themselves down 53-18 at halftime, Cornersville played close with the Eagles for the majority of the game, but could not overcome Eagleville's depth and experience in a 74-53 loss.

The Lady Bulldogs had once last chance to sharpen its craft before the district tournament on Tuesday night when Eagleville came calling to southern Marshall County.
Cornersville (12-10) had a great opportunity to evaluate how far it had come since the Lady Bulldogs opened the season against Eagleville (13-13) in a game that saw the Lady Bulldogs finish the contest with its second lowest scoring total of the season at 23.
