Marshall County had its hands full on Wednesday night as the Tigers welcomed defending Class AA champion Spring Hill in the 2017 home opener. The Raiders went up 10-0, before the Tigers roared back with a six run fifth but Spring Hill countered with six more runs in the sixth to end the game early on the 10-run rule. "In spurts we played pretty good," MCHS coach Mike Reese said. "And it's early. We've had four scrimmages and we looked pretty good at that. But you know, when you've got to open up the district against the defending state champions, you've got to bring your 'A' game and we haven't done that yet." more
After a big 17-0 opening day win at Centennial on Monday, the Forrest Lady Rockets returned to the Field of Dreams at Chapel Hill on Wednesday where they beat Eagleville 10-0 in five innings. “It was a slow start there with our 1-2-3-4 hitters, but our 5-6-7 came along and picked it up,” Forrest coach Becky Cheatham said. “I feel like when we have to take batting practice in the Fieldhouse it affects our vision when we get out here, believe it or not, so if we can get outside and take batting practice I believe we will do a better job at the plate.” more
Years of hard work have paid off for Cornersville multi-sport athlete Madison Hopkins when the shortstop signed with Motlow State Community College to continue a long line of Lady Dawg softball standouts to make the jump to the college ranks. Hopkins, a three-year starter for the softball team and basketball standout, decided to become a Lady Buck after a visit to the Lynchburg based college despite interest from several other schools. "When I visited Motlow in the fall it just felt right," Hopkins said. "I had a few other schools interested, so I knew I still had some major decisions to make, but I knew Motlow was in my top two schools." more

Lewisburg Middle School welcomed E.A. Cox to Marshall County on Monday night for a double-header as the Tigers played its fourth game in five days and looked to win a sixth game in a row, following a seven-run loss to Forrest on February 24. The first game of the twin bill turned into the Zach Graves show as the Tiger ace threw a complete game no hitter, struck out 10 batters, and drove home the winning run in the first inning as LMS won a tight 2-1 decision at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field. "Obviously our pitching was stout tonight like it has been all season," Tiger coach Beau Hardison, who has lost just two games in two seasons as head coach said. "We still haven't played to our potential yet, but our pitching has definitely been our strong point." more
Sometimes there is nothing you can do. On Saturday at Chapel Hill, Perry County junior guard Chynia Brooks was unstoppable as she poured in 44 points in a 68-67 Class A State Sectional win over Forrest to lead the Lady Vikings to their second consecutive trip to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s BlueCross State Basketball Championships. “I told the girls a couple of weeks ago we might play a great game and lose and I think that’s what happened tonight,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “We could not stop Brooks no matter what we did.” more
The High School Swim season ended February 11 with a trip to the State Swim Meet by Gabrielle Cheatham, sophomore at MCHS. Swimmers from MCHS, CHS and FHS practice and travel as one team coached by Jeff Borne (Head Coach) and Alison Mulliniks (Assistant Coach), but the swimmers compete at meets for their individual schools. more
The Marshall County Tigers first district championship in over a decade and Giles County's upset win over Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA) in the district semi's set up the Lions and Tigers for a collision course in the regional semifinals. And as predicted the Tigers easily beat Creek Wood and the Lions ran over Stewart County to start region tournament play to set in motion the last dance between the two 12AA powers before CPA splits into the TSSAA private school division. more
The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs suffered through inconsistency throughout the season, including opening up the campaign with a three-game losing streak which was followed by a four-game winning streak before two three-game mid-season winning streaks sandwiched around another three-game losing streak. A convincing 14-point victory over longtime rival Columbia Academy started the postseason off on a high note before two straight district tournament losses put the Lady Bulldogs (13-13) in the unfortunate position of traveling to Lawrence County to take on the number one seed from District12A--the Loretto Mustangs (21-7). more
A fourth place finish in the District 11A Tournament put the Cornersville Bulldogs on the long road to Wayne County to face Collinwood (20-9), who won the 12A tournament after tying with Loretto for second place during the regular season. Cornersville (8-18) made the region for the first time in six years after more than doubling its win total of the past two seasons combined, but was in too deep against the Trojans, going down 39-15 at the half before falling 80-64 to end the season. more
Wednesday night’s Region 5A championship game probably was not pleasing to the eye, but the Forrest Lady Rockets did not care as they outlasted Moore County 33-32 to claim their first region title in six years. “It was a game of ups and downs and momentum swings, it was a typical tournament game, both teams fought really, really hard,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “We didn’t’ play that great, but it doesn’t matter, it’s about surviving.” Forrest (26-7) hosts a familiar foe on Saturday as Region 6A Tournament runner-up Perry County (17-15) makes its second trip of the season to Chapel Hill with a Class A State Tournament berth on the line. more

fter a third place finish in the District 9A Tournament, the Forrest Lady Rockets traveled to Clarksville Academy for a first-round Region 5A Tournament game. The number two seeded Lady Cougars were ready and took Forrest to the limit before a fourth-quarter comeback secured a 50-44 win for Chapel Hill. “Clarksville Academy played really good, but I’m really proud of my kids for never quitting and never doubting,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “We had some kids step up and get some big boards, big shots, big stops, so I’m really happy.” With the win, Forrest (24-7) takes on the District 9A Tournament champions Huntland (27-5) for the fourth time this season in the region semifinals tonight in a 6 p.m. tip-off at Eagleville. more
Coming off an impressive 22-point win over Nolensville in the opening round of the District 12AA Tournament, the MCHS Tigerettes met Giles County for the third time this season with a district championship game berth on the line. Already shorthanded with Demarie Ingram and Sydne Solomon out for the season with injuries, the Tigerettes were dealt another devastating blow hours before tipoff when freshman wing Kelsey Keiler, coming off a career-high 18 points versus Nolensville, was deemed inactive for the contest from concussion symptoms suffered in the late stages against the Lady Knights. more
The District 12AA consolation game on Monday night at times resembled more a game of chess than basketball as Page and Marshall County fought to the end in a 28-21 Lady Patriot’s win. With Marshall County down to just four players that played meaningful minutes during the regular season and no bench to speak of due to injuries, the Tigerettes devised a game plan that slowed the pace of the game and utilized more brain than brawn for the better part of the contest and came close to the upset. more
The Tigerettes (13-12) were in the unique position of opening the District 12AA Tournament on Thursday night against a team, Nolensville (10-17), that they had played just two days prior to the close the season. Despite only beating the Knights by just two points on Tuesday night, a resurgent Tigerettes’ squad flexed its defensive muscle by holding Nolensville to a season-low point total in a 49-27 win on Thursday. "On Tuesday night, being that we had beaten them (55-42) the first time we played them, we felt like it was just gonna be an easy win so we didn't really come out and play like we were supposed to," senior point guard Zachuriya O'Neal, who added four points, four assists, and five rebounds, said. "After going through practice and walk-through, I kind of felt like everybody knew what they were supposed to do and we came out and executed the game plan." more
