The 2016-2017 Forrest Lady Rockets came up one win short of claiming their third Class A state softball championship, but the runner-up finish did not overshadow an incredible season.
“When you get a chance to sit back and reflect on the season, you say ‘Oh Golly’,” Forrest coach Becky Cheatham said. “With all that youth, for us to accomplish what we did just shows what good character this team had and what you can do if you just believe it can be done.”
Forrest finished with a team record 41 wins against just six losses with two of the setbacks coming against defending state champion Meigs County in the winner’s bracket finals at the Spring Fling.

Playing in the summer league is an important aspect of the Forrest baseball program because it allows head coach Bart Joyce an opportunity to provide some extra tutelage to the younger players needed next season to step in for the six graduating seniors that won three consecutive District 9-A titles for the Rockets.
“Number one, it gives the coaches a look at what we got for the upcoming season,” Joyce said. “Number two, we get to put guys in positions and some situations to get them ready for next year and it might not be the exact position they played this past season, but it may be a new position we are looking at.”

Forrest needed to win one out of the two games in Friday’s championship final day in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s Spring Fling Championships to claim the school’s third state title, but the defending champion Meigs County Lady Tigers were the ones who celebrated in the end as the swept the Lady Rockets 7-0 and 11-5 for back-to-back championships.
“We didn’t play our best the first game and I think that affected us mentally,” Forrest coach Becky Cheatham said. “But, I will give it to them, they were the best team both times.”
“They hit the ball and we didn’t, it’s as simple as that.”
It was the third time in 10 years that a team has come out of the loser’s bracket to win the Class A title with Forrest pulling it off over Trinity Christian Academy in 2007-2008 and Chattanooga Christian also battled out in 2011-2012 over Decatur County.

Forrest and Summertown had met seven times in May post-season contests prior to Thursday night’s Class A winner’s bracket final in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s Spring Fling Championships with the Lady Rockets winning every time.
But it was the first ever state tournament tilt between the two rural small town schools and the game was an edge of the seat affair the entire time as Forrest made it eight wins in a row over the Lady Eagles via a 4-3 eight-inning triumph that ended with a walk off RBI single by Kayla Gillespie.

The Forrest Rockets (23-12-1) reached the end of the line to another successful baseball season as they lost 5-3 to Summertown in a Class A sectional game Friday night at Chapel Hill.
“We just couldn’t get that last chip, we couldn’t get a hit here and there,” Forrest coach Bart Joyce said. “I told the boys there is nothing you did wrong, it’s just a great ball team that beat a great ball team.”
“I’m super proud of the way these kids played and their effort all year, they really showed out this year.”

For the second time in as many seasons the Forrest Lady Rockets and Columbia Academy Lady Bulldogs squared off in Columbia for a chance to claim a sectional victory and advance to the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s Spring Fling State Championships at Murfreesboro.
Lady Bulldog pitcher Brittany Adair gave up a minuscule four hits over seven innings to the Lady Rockets, but Forrest senior pitcher Samantha King ruled the sophomore ace in the circle by giving up just one hit, while racking up a game-high nine strikeouts for the complete game 4-0 win.

The Forrest Lady Rockets had a frustrating evening at Cross Plains, coming up short in a 2-1 loss to East Robertson in Wednesday night’s Region 5A Tournament championship game.
“I don’t know if we were a bundle of nerves or what and I don’t know why, it wasn’t an elimination game,” Forrest coach Becky Cheatham said. “We were shaky and did not get off to a good start and just couldn’t bounce back.”
It was the first loss to a Class A team this season for Forrest (37-4), while the Lady Indians (22-12) made it back-to-back region final wins over the Lady Rockets and evened the all-time series at 4-4 in title tilts.

When it comes to Eagleville versus Forrest at any sport the competition is always fierce.
During the 2017 baseball season the competition has been extra stiff as the two schools located just over nine miles apart have met five times with no game being decided by less than three runs.
On Wednesday night the District 9A rivals met for the sixth time with the Region 5A championship on the line with the winner gaining the advantage of hosting a home game in the sectional round of the state tournament.
