Not even a power outage and a three-day delay could stop the Cornersville Bulldogs from destiny as they busted a 24-game losing streak to Richland with a 54-42 road win. “We made a few timely shots in the second half when they were making a run, but it feels great to beat them,” Cornersville coach Matt Hagan said. “We didn’t play well the previous two times we had played them going back to last year, but it was things we were doing, not them. We still have a long way to go.” Last Friday, Cornersville travelled to Richland where the girls won the first game and the Bulldogs trailed 8-6 in the nightcap when the lights went out in the gym. more
After three straight wins, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs ran up against a buzz saw at Richland Friday as they suffered a 55-25 lopsided loss. “I know these girls well and they are unbelievable young ladies, all of them are,” Cornersville coach Peyton Newton said. “We just have to find a way to have all 14 on the same page and understand that you have to compete at your best in each drill, each day, each practice.” “When we get that out of them as a team, we’ll win ballgames.” more
The Forrest Lady Rockets (8-1) had to shake off some rust from a 10-day layoff before rolling over the Lewis County Lady Panthers 62-38 Monday night at Chapel Hill. “They came out early and punched us in the nose and got us off balance and we took it,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “They are a really good team and have some good pieces.” “In the first half we didn’t defend like we are capable of defending, but the second half we did and in the end we just kept grinding and we pulled one out.” Forrest’s game with Houston County that was scheduled for last Thursday was cancelled due to illness in the Lady Irish camp. more
Somethings got in to the Forrest Rockets, who played another solid, inspired game Monday night at Chapel Hill as they had to grind out a 70-67 win over the Lewis County Panthers. “Lewis County has had a real nice run here lately,” Forrest coach Randy Toombs said. “I have been keeping up with their wins and losses and they have beaten some real good teams, so that was nice.” more

The Marshall County Tigers completed the sweep of the season series over Lawrence County, crushing the Wildcats 78-42 Tuesday night at the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium in Lewisburg. “If we play like this every night, we will be a tough out,” MCHS coach Lavon King said. “Right now one of the biggest things I thought that we needed to improve on was rebounding and getting something out of our post play.” “It’s a slow and gradual process, but we were are starting to get some dividends from our post play.” more
After a big 53-52 road win at Maplewood Friday night, the Marshall County Tigerettes returned to the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium in Lewisburg Tuesday for a grudge match versus Lawrence County. The Lady Wildcats won the first game of the season series 58-49 seven days prior on their home floor and held a slight halftime lead on Tuesday before the Tigerettes went on a second half tear that resulted in a 57-42 win to even the score. more
After demolishing Liberty 48-12 in the opening round of the Duck River Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday at Eagleville, the Forrest Middle School Lady Rockets went into a deep scoring freeze on Monday against number-one seeded Huntland. Forrest scored five points in the first half and only 10 more in the second half as they were eliminated by the Lady Hornets 32-15. Logan Mclennan was the lone player in double figures in the contest as the Huntland standout netted 12 points, including three 3-pointers. Anilee Dippold had a team-high eight points for Forrest in the loss, while Macyn Kirby, Meagan Mealer, and Carli Warner tallied two, and Bethany Yates had one marker. more
The red-hot Forrest Lady Rockets continued their winning ways on Friday night at Chapel Hill, posting a big 48-37 signature win over the 2016-2017 Class A state runner-up Summertown Lady Eagles. Summertown (7-2) had won four consecutive games coming into the contest and three in a row over Forrest (7-1) in the annual non-conference matchup. “They (Summertown) are a well-coached team and really good defensively and they made it tough on us by getting us out of our comfort zone in the first half,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “In the second half we made some big shots, that’s all it was.” more
After a tumultuous 1-7 start to the season and coming off disappointing back-to-back one-point losses, the Forrest Rockets circled the wagons and came away with a stunning 61-55 upset over a stout Summertown team that rolled into Chapel Hill Friday night with a 6-1 record. “That was a real nice win,” Forrest coach Randy Toombs said. “Anytime you can beat Summertown period, it’s a good win, they are a good, hard playing basketball team.” more
For the second season in a row, just like on the field, the back-to-back Class A state runner-ups and Region 5A champion Cornersville Bulldogs dominated the All-Region Team selections announced this week. Cornersville coach Gerard Randolph and his staff posted Coach of the Year and Staff of the Year honors in back-to-back campaigns. more
After a tough, one-point loss at Martin Luther King Magnet School Friday night, the Forrest Rockets just missed again at Chapel Hill on Tuesday when they wasted a fourth quarter comeback in a 70-69 setback versus Cascade. “I have the most undisciplined team I have ever had here,” Forrest coach Randy Toombs said. Asked what’s wrong, Toombs said, “We didn’t have good backside help, not playing good man-to-man defense, not helping when we needed to help, not being up the line allowing people to do what they want to do, people on the boards staring and watching.” more
The Forrest Lady Rockets are off to a flying start to begin the season with six wins and just one loss with the latest victory coming against longtime rival Cascade, who came into Tuesday night’s game at Chapel Hill unbeaten. After a 65-47 wire-to-wire win by Forrest, the girls from Wartrace left with the same 6-1 record. “We did a good job, they (Cascade) were undefeated, they are a lot better than they have been the last couple of years, he (Rece Chumley) has done a good job with them,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “I’m very pleased the way we played, especially with some of the distractions we have had the past couple of days.” “We came together and played well, just like all year, we played team ball and made the extra pass.” more
To get your team to where it’s making a deep postseason run a consistent basis, the best way to emulate late season pressure and talent is to schedule those attributes in the non-conference slate. Marshall County coach David Steely has always and continues to do exactly that as evidenced by Saturday night’s home contest against 2017-18 1A runner-up and 2016-17 1A state semifinalist Summertown (6-1). more
The Marshall County (1-6) boys continued its stacked 2018-19 non-conference schedule with a home matchup against 1A royalty Summertown (6-1) in the Tigers’ second straight Saturday game. Last Saturday, the Tigers played national powerhouse Corinth (MS) to the final buzzer, but ultimately lost 68-62 in the final game of a tournament that featured a who's-who of both nationally ranked players and teams before coming home to take a another close loss to 3A Columbia Central 80-74. But unfortunately for Marshall County coach Lavon King, the Tigers once again had plenty of firepower on the offensive end, but were unable to find equal balance of the defensive side of the ball in the 75-71 setback. more
The Cornersville Bulldogs captured the hearts of their fans with a purposeful grit and determination the entire season and on Saturday at Tennessee Tech University's Tucker Stadium, the Frog Bottom boys did not disappoint anyone after a gut-wrenching 7-6 loss to Whitwell in the Class A BlueCross Bowl title game. “I can’t say enough about our fan support,” Cornersville coach Gerard Randolph said. “I knew they would come, I hate the outcome was the way it was, but I’m so appreciative of our fans and Marshall County as a whole, they did a great job supporting theses kids.” more
If you could flip the game around, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs would have had a great chance at beating Richland Tuesday night at home. The Lady Bulldogs (4-3) got off to a slow start that lasted for three quarters before they finally showed what they had, but it was way too late as the Lady Raiders (4-1) took advantage of their good fortune in a 51-31 win. “We have got to get comfortable at the beginning of the game and not wait until we are down 10 or 20 to start playing well,” Cornersville coach Peyton Newton. “We are playing some young ones and inexperienced ones and I think when the moments are big and they get kind of timid they are not sure of themselves.” more
