After capturing the regular season title, Nichirin entered the Marshall County Babe Ruth League’s postseason tournament as the main rival of the talented Columbia based Game Time squad. The two teams made it to the Gold Pool finals on Thursday night at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field and Nichirin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before Game Time exploded with 16 unanswered runs to take the 16-1 three-inning, run-rule win. more
The shortened 2020 Marshall County Babe Ruth League season ended Friday night as did the baseball careers for many of the players in the final 16-18 year-old division contest. According to many of his longtime teammates, Thomas J. Beardsley rarely brought a glove, bat, or equipment bag to a ballgame over the years, but on Friday night, Beardsley brought the only thing he needed….an ‘A’ game on the mound. more

July 8, 2020 The TSSAA Board of Control held a special called meeting on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 to discuss plans for the upcoming football and girls’ soccer seasons due to the extended COVID-19 State of Emergency that is set to expire on August 29. Bernard Childress, Executive Director of the TSSAA, updated the Board on the status of discussions with the Governor's legal counsel. “We are working with the Governor’s legal counsel and based on the conversation we are having, we think it is best to delay any vote on a contingency plan,” stated Childress. more
Like all other prep baseball teams in Tennessee, the 2020 Forrest graduating class’ senior season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Rockets got to play one last game on Senior Night at Chapel Hill as the participated in an intra-squad contest in front of a packed house on Friday. The Blue Team consisted of all the Forrest underclassmen who squared off versus the White Team, made up of all four 2020 seniors and some past greats from the school. more

Even though Marshall County High School’s Walker Whaley was denied his senior season on the diamond at Joe George Field in Lewisburg because of the COVID-19 pandemic, his proven skills were enough for the coaches at Martin Methodist College, who offered Whaley a baseball scholarship on the RedHawks. “It feels great that I’m getting to go to the next level to play ball and I’m excited to go play at Martin Methodist, I wanted to go to a four-year school, so it is something I really like,” Whaley said. more
It’s been 11 weeks since the last live sporting event in Marshall County, but that is going to change Friday night when the Marshall County Babe Ruth League opens play at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Field in Lewisburg. “I’m wound up, I’ve been on the phone everyday talking to people and making sure everything is alright,” former Marshall County League Babe Ruth president and current league executive Ken Demastus said. “And David Crane (current Babe Ruth League president) has really done a great job.” more
Tigert’s Tigers regain superb form Jason Tigert was entering his second season as head coach in Lewisburg and had the Tigers fired up after a 9-21 first season on the bench. Senior post player DeShaun Greer led a talented squad that included the sharpshooting 3-point crazy trio of Blaise Spencer, Ryan Nicholson, and Hunter Osborn. These guys could fill it up from anywhere on the court, plus they had great depth and experience with Cameron McCullough, Jamie Perryman, Michael Murphy, and Cody Duvall. more
I was really excited about the 2007-2008 basketball season after experiencing some great hoops the prior year as both the Forrest Lady Rockets and Marshall County Tigerettes advanced to the state tournament with Lewisburg finishing as runner-ups. The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs had compiled a solid team with high hopes and were ready to make a run for district supremacy. more
Forrest girls basketball coach Jeremy Jean resigned from his coaching position on Monday, citing personal reasons for his decision. “Being out of school for the coronavirus made me realize how much I miss out on,” Jean said. “I decided it was time for me to step down from coaching and be more present for my family.” more
Just tell me it’s not true As we continue looking back into the past of the fall of 2007 in Marshall County sports history, it comes with a very heavy heart, broken actually. When I started this I knew at some point during the journey there was going to be a large amount of sadness, but I didn’t expect it to come this soon. I have never been the kind of sports writer that does things from a far, I like to be in the action, getting to know the coaches, the kids, and the parents. That comes with a price, most notably when one of the young athletes suddenly passes away. My first heartbreak was DeShaun Greer, who was a 2008 graduate of Marshall County High School, a great two-sport athlete for the Tigers, and an even better young man. more
Leadership makes a difference, now and in the future Greg McCullough had just arrived inside MTSU's Murphy Center for the Thursday games at the Tennessee Girls’ State Basketball Championships. But as the Memphis Central principal and TSSAA Board of Control Vice President would soon come to find out, the sports world and society writ large had begun the painful process of shutting down social activities due to the COVID-19 coronavirus. The pandemic was raging and closing in fast on the storied Glass House. more
Executive Director Bernard Childress and the TSSAA state office staff are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on interscholastic athletics in Tennessee. Due to the ongoing social distancing efforts, the Board of Control's three-day meeting originally scheduled for June in Murfreesboro has been cancelled. The Board will take into consideration the items from the June agenda at the August meeting. The first day of the June meeting was to be set aside for a classification study session. Instead of a face-to-face meeting, each Board member will be sent the plans they requested to review with the goal of holding the classification study session in late July. more
The beginning of the 2007-2008 prep school season was my second year covering sports in Marshall County and it turned out to be full of great memories that included a visit to Chapel Hill by one of my boyhood idols, a fantastic performance on the golf course by a future Milwaukee Brewer farmhand, an unbelievable band competition, and the first half of a return to glory by the Marshall County Tigerettes. more
Despite circumstances, lessons from athletic participation endure Have you ever wondered what life would be like without sports? Now we know. And it isn’t fun. No NCAA basketball tournament. No traditional Major League Baseball Opening Days. No professional basketball or hockey playoffs. No Little League or youth soccer. The Summer Olympics have been delayed for at least a year. And the list of community cancellations and postponements is nearly endless... more
