The Forrest Lady Rockets found out the hard way just how good the Wayne County Lady Wildcats are when they left Waynesboro with a stinging 61-38 loss Monday night at the Wayne County Christmas Tournament.
"We didn't come to play," said Forrest head coach Jeremy Jean. "If it wasn't for Christina (Curtner) in the first half, we wouldn't have been in the game at all."

Forrest sophomore Mark Pope had an incredible freshman season last year, but has struggled early on this year until Monday night when he broke out of his shooting slump in a big way with a season high 26 points, including 6 three-pointers as the Rockets held on to beat the host Wildcats 51-48 at the Wayne County Christmas Classic.
Forrest head coach Davy McClaran said after the game, "We all know what kind of player Pope can be when he gets hot. We have just been waiting eleven games for him to get there. It was nice to see him finally get in the rhythm and knock some down."

With a hot 3-0 start, the mindset of the Forrest Rockets is much different from last season when they limped out to a 0-6 start before settling down and making a late season run that culminated with a District 9A Tournament title.
After beating Tullahoma 47-38 on the road Friday night, the Rockets made it two in a row over the Wildcats with a rough and tumble 49-44 win at the Forrest Thanksgiving Tournament on Wednesday.

The Marshall County Tigers, coming off two tough losses to open the season at Bolivar were back in the friendly confines of Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium Tuesday night, playing in front of a packed house in Lewisburg and they took care of business, garnering their first win of the season in a coast-to-coast 61-48 victory over Columbia Central.
"It's nice to get back in this environment and be able to play in front of such a great crowd, wow!" said MCHS head coach Jason Tigert. "Anytime we can get a 'W' over Columbia is good."

The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (2-1) fattened their win total Tuesday night by defeating Collinwood 56-48 on the road in their final game before Thanksgiving after fending off a frantic rally by the Trojanettes in the second half.
Although the Lady Bulldogs had lost seven of the last 10 meetings between the two teams, Cornersville seemed unfazed by the hostile environment of Collinwood's gym in the first half and held a 30-19 lead at the break before opening up a 12-point advantage early in the third quarter.

After scoring first, it looked as if the road woes that had plagued the Forrest Rockets this year would disappear, instead all the shortcomings that had sent them three hours away for a first round playoff game to Dresden resurfaced, sending head coach Kyle Stacey's team back to Chapel Hill, one and done for the second season in a row.
"Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes, a major problem this year," said Stacey. "I told them before the game when you get to this level, you can't make crucial mistakes."
Forrest finished with a record of 6-5 with all of their losses coming away from the "The Rock" and the Rockets are now an even 94-94 since 1993 and have not won a playoff game since the 7-6 win over Mt. Pleasant at home in 1992.

At this time of year, prep football teams are thrilled to be playing and all three Marshall County squads made the big dance and will be in action, but the trio will be on the road for the first round of the TSSAA playoffs tonight. It could have been a much sweeter scenario for the Forrest Rockets, but a dismal 1-4 road record and losses in three out of their last five ballgames sends the 6-4 Rockets west to Dresden where they will face off with the 8-2 Lions...

It was too little, too late for the FMS Rockets Thursday night in Chapel Hill, as a torrid fourth quarter comeback was not enough to overcome their earlier mistakes in a 12-6 loss to Westwood Jr. High.
FMS head coach Josh Roberson said after the game, "We were not ready to play. We have to re-think our pregame strategy before home games. Hopefully we can get some air conditioning in the field house and have them sit down there instead of splitting them up. Maybe do some board work and stuff and get them thinking on football."
