With a loss sending either team to the sidelines for the rest of the season, Marshall County welcomed a familiar foe to Reese Hambrick Field on Tuesday when Giles County came to town for a District 12-AA Tournament elimination game. Youth was served as two freshman pitchers, two freshman batters, and strong hitting performances from a bevy of sophomores allowed Marshall County to escape with a closer than expected 9-7 win over Giles County, a team the Tigerettes had beaten handily twice during the regular season. more
The Forrest Rockets had their first stumble since April 2, losing 4-3 to Eagleville Wednesday night at Forrest in the first of two District 9-A championship games. The two squads met last night at Chapel Hill for the outright title. "Our boys fought hard, we took it right down there to the end and just fell short, but we have another game tomorrow," Forrest coach Bart Joyce said. "This group of seniors wants this district title and there is no doubt in my mind these guys will be pumped up and don't need anything, they always just move forward." more
Starting pitcher Mikaela King helped Cornersville advance to the Region 6-A tournament for the first time in five years on Wednesday night, as the sophomore hurler tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 6-0 victory over Mt. Pleasant in the loser's bracket final of the District 11-A tourney at Culleoka High School. Cornersville (15-7) had fallen in the loser's bracket final three of the previous four years before finally getting over the hump this year. more
The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs kept their season alive on Tuesday night by defeating District 11-A tournament host Culleoka 9-1 in the second round of the loser's bracket to record their third win over the Lady Warriors this year. Thanks to Tuesday's victory, Cornersville advanced to the loser's bracket final against Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday with a berth to the Region 6-A tournament on the line. more
ith the season on the line in the loser's bracket of the District 12-AA Tournament, the Marshall County (23-9) Tigerettes hosted a Spring Hill (9-16) team it had beaten by a combined four runs earlier in the year with elimination looming for the loser. The Tigerettes fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but continuously grinded throughout the remaining six innings to take the 5-4 win to remain within striking distance of a region tournament berth and a district championship. more
After defeating Mt. Pleasant 6-0 in the loser's bracket final earlier in the evening, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (15-8) had to settle for second place in the District 11-A tournament when they dropped a hard fought 4-2 decision in the title game to regular season champ Columbia Academy (20-6) at Culleoka High School. Needing to defeat CA twice to claim the championship, Cornersville fell into an early 3-0 hole before battling back to slice the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning. more
hile Huntland and Moore County beat each other up in the District 9-A Tournament at Eagleville, the defending champion Forrest Lady Rockets swept up the mess, outscoring their opponents 59-2 as they continued outright dominance of the tournament title, winning every one this century. Huntland came up with an exciting 1-0, 10 inning win over Moore County in the loser's bracket final before running out of gas in the championship game. more
The Bulldogs (11-13) looked to build on its dominant 7-4 win over Richland the previous evening and pull an upset against longtime rival Columbia Academy (29-5) for a chance to move into the finals of the winners bracket of the district 11A tournament. The Bulldogs namesakes from Columbia came into the game undefeated in the district, but had beaten Cornersville by just three runs in a district showdown a week and a half earlier. more
Facing a win or go home situation on Monday night, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs traveled to Culleoka to take on a familiar opponent in Richland with its season on the line. Cornersville had faced the Lady Raiders from Lynnville three times during the regular season, winning all three games by a combined score of 37-6, but the young Richland team put up a fight before succumbing to the brilliant pitching of sophomore Mikaela King and the Bulldogs hung on for a 4-2 win. more
After coming up with a 6-1 win over Giles County on Saturday, the Marshall County Tigers had the imposing task of traveling to host CPA on Monday with elimination from the District 12-AA Tournament facing Lewisburg. "I was really proud of our guys, real proud of what these seniors have accomplished," MCHS coach Mike "Monk Reese said. "We are in the best district in double 'A' baseball and I would not be surprised if we have two teams go on and do well in the state." more
The Marshall County (4-8-1, 1-4-1) boys soccer team entered the district tournament Thursday night on a regular season ending hot streak, winning three in a row and four of its last five games after starting the season 0-6-1. The Tigers first round opponent was a familiar foe in Giles County (10-5-4, 5-1-1), the same team that ended the 2015 season for Marshall County and beat the Tigers 4-0 during the fifth game of the 2016 season. more
The Marshall County Tigerettes had their backs against the wall entering last night's game versus Giles County, winning the District 12-AA opener 6-2 at Lewisburg Friday night before suffering a tough 4-2 loss at Page on Monday. "The Tigerettes are fighters, we have a lot of school pride and competitive girls," MCHS coach Heather Denton said. "They are ready to play and want to win. Now we get to play every day and every team in the district to prove that we deserve to be in the championship." more
The top-seeded and seventh-ranked Forrest Rockets finally got a chance to play baseball after earning a first-round bye in the District 9-A Tournament, hosting Huntland Saturday afternoon. The Hornets put up a good fight, climbing back from an early nine-run deficit before a second offensive blitz was too much to handle as Forrest ran away and hid via a 16-6 five inning, run-rule win. more
The old sports adage about being tough to beat a team three times in one season proved true once again as the Cornersville Bulldogs took down the Richland Raiders in convincing fashion 7-4 after losing to its longtime rival 7-6 and 6-2 earlier in the 2016 schedule. "We were better in all three phases of the game than we were in the regular season," Cornersville coach Ben Putnam said. "We pitched better, we fielded better, and we hit better. We weren't very good at any of it the previous two meetings against (Richland) and today we were." more
