Brian Borton shot a 3-under par round of 69 in Saturday’s opening round of the Saddle Creek Club Championship and came back with a 75 on Sunday to capture the title with an overall even par round of 144 on the 6,708 yard tract.
Bill Buckles came in second place, shooting an even par round of 72 on Saturday, followed by a 76 on Sunday for a 148 total.
Donnie Deffenbaugh (79-84—163), Daniel Mason (89-82—171), and Tim Anderson (89-84—173) rounded out the top five.

The Marshall County Babe Ruth League’s 15-year old all-stars knew they had their work cut out for them at the World Series as part of the 10 best teams in the country that met in Lawrenceburg, beginning on Thursday.
“People have to understand that we competed with the nine best teams in the country, I’m not ashamed of any of it,” Marshall County manager Mike Mills said. “The level of play and size of the cities that they have is hard for us to compete with.”
“They have 1,500 kids to pick from, we had to beg to get 11 kids and they had to cut kids, that’s the difference.”

Lewisburg’s Joe Liggett lost the inaugural Greater Lewisburg City Open golf title last year by four strokes to Tate Lowery and he was disappointed in his effort. Liggett came back with a vengeance, shooting a blistering 66 on Saturday and a solid 70 on Sunday to post an 8-under par score, eight strokes clear of Lowery (69-75--144) and Brian Borton (72-72--144), who both finished at even par for the tournament at Saddle Creek Golf Club...

The Marshall County Babe Ruth League 15-year old all-stars are working hard to bounce back after a disappointing showing that produced a 0-3 record at the Southeast Regional Tournament in Greenville, North Carolina.
“We went down there and the trip was long, it took most of them 11 hours to get there and we didn’t get a lot of rest before we came back the next day,” said Babe Ruth Wall of Famer Mike Mills. “They just weren’t sharp defensively or offensively and we never seemed to get in rhythm the way the games were set up.”
Mills’ squad has an opportunity of a lifetime ahead of them as they earned an at-large bid as the Tennessee state champion in the Babe Ruth World Series at Lawrenceburg this week.

The Marshall County 13-year old all-stars travelled to Lebanon for the East Tennessee State Tournament and went 1-2 to end its postseason run.
Marshall County lost 3-2 to Lawrenceburg in the opening round Thursday night before bouncing back with a big 10-2 win over Giles County on Friday.
On Saturday, Marshall County and Lawrenceburg met again and this time the score was not close as Lawrenceburg’s Ayden Luffman tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven in a 13-0 shutout win over Marshall County.

The Marshall County 15-year old all-stars had a first round bye in the East Tennessee Babe Ruth State Tournament as Bellevue beat Lebanon 6-4 in Friday night’s opening round at the Jonathon D. Hollingsworth Field in Lewisburg.
On Saturday night, the hosts took on Bellevue and came away with a big 9-1 win that was full of drama, mostly of the non-baseball variety.
Marshall County took care of the on the field drama early, scoring one run in the first inning, three in the second, and one more in the fourth to open up a 5-1 lead.

The Marshall County 15 year-old all-stars continued its postseason tear on Sunday with a 16-3 victory over Lebanon in the title game of the East Tennessee State Tournament and in turn afforded itself the unique opportunity to become the first boys’ team from Marshall County to play in a Babe Ruth World Series.
The only other Marshall County team to make a World Series appearance was the Danny Hollingsworth coached 12U girls’ squad that finished in third place at Alachua, Fla. in 2012.
The drama was scarce on Sunday at the Jonathon D. Hollingsworth Memorial Field in Lewisburg as Marshall County jumped out to an 8-0 first inning lead and made history with an easy 16-3 win to win the state title and advance to the Southeast Regional Tournament in Greenville, NC next week.

When the 15-year old Marshall County all-stars man their positions on the diamond Saturday afternoon on the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Field in Lewisburg for the Babe Ruth State Tournament they will be chasing history.
The winner of the three-team event will automatically qualify for the Babe Ruth World Series at Lawrenceburg on August 10.
No Marshall County all-star team has ever played in a Babe Ruth World Series.
Lawrenceburg and Martin are the only two Tennessee Babe Ruth Leagues to host a World Series in any division and no team from the Volunteer State has won the event since 1996 when the Nashville 16-18 year old all-stars claimed the title at Dare County, NC.

The Marshall County 14U Babe Ruth all-stars hosted the state tournament at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Field in Lewisburg and were looking for a berth in the SE Regional Tournament in Ocala, Florida the first week of August.
After a big 8-0 win over Mt. Juliet in the opening round on Friday, Marshall County took down Lawrenceburg 7-2 on Saturday to get within one win from advancing before back-to-back losses to Tullahoma on Sunday and Monday ended their postseason.
Logan Courtemanche took the ball in Friday night’s opener and pitched 5.2 innings of no-hit baseball before leaving the game on a pitch count.

All-Star baseball is in full force this weekend with four state tournaments beginning tonight in Lewisburg as the Marshall County Youth Baseball and Softball League hosts the Cal Ripken 6U, 7U, and 8U all-stars at the Richard Cashion Sports Complex.
The Marshall County 6U all-stars open up pool play versus Clay County on Field 3 at 6:30 p.m. tonight with opening ceremonies to follow.
The 6U boys play South Williamson at 2 p.m. on Saturday before bracket play commences.

The Marshall County 13-year old all-stars hosted the District 8 Tournament at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field in Lewisburg over the weekend and came in second place to Lawrenceburg.
The two squads had a major tussle in Friday night’s opening round as they combined for just 11 hits in the contest.
Carson Cheek turned in a spectacular performance on the mound for Marshall County, tossing all six innings in a tough luck 3-2 loss.
Cheek gave up two earned runs on five hits, while striking out five and walking three Lawrenceburg batters.

Generally it does not matter if the sport is baseball or badminton, or whether the participants are high school seniors or second graders, anytime Giles County and Marshall County get together in any kind of competition the stakes are always high.
The Marshall County 8U all-stars fought their way out of the loser’s bracket to face Giles County on Monday night and with a win, the chance to take home the district championship heading into the state tournament.

Marshall County took all the momentum and plenty of confidence into the winner take all 8U Cal Ripken District all-star championship game at the Richard Cashion Sports Complex in Lewisburg Monday night.
The Marshall County upstarts fought its way back from the loser’s bracket, which included a 15-0 walloping of Giles County less than an hour earlier
The win set up a rematch between two longtime foes for the district championship.

The Lewisburg Elks Lodge #1990 had suffered through a three-year championship drought before claiming their first Babe Ruth League title since 2013 with a dramatic 7-6 come from behind win over Marshall Medical Center Saturday night at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field in Lewisburg.
Bryson Whaley dealt MMC the final blow when he laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Matthew McCormick from third base with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Elks starting pitcher and 15-year MVP Preston Shelton was locked in a pitcher’s duel with MMC ace Austin Grubbs as both hurlers did not allow a hit through the first two innings.

A-Plus Collision Center broke a four-game losing streak in Monday night’s Babe Ruth opener, putting away a pesky Matthews’ squad 11-4 in five innings.
Tristan Griggs had a big game for A-Plus, picking up the win on the mound to move to 3-0 on the season and at the plate, Griggs went 1-for-2 with two RBI, a walk and two runs scored.
Blake Mooreland (RBI, BB), Zack Graves (RBI, 2RS), and John Morgan Thomas (2RBI, RS) all had two hits apiece for A-Plus.
