I read with great interest Barbara Kennedy's article about schools closing too quickly for weather considerations. As a school board member, I admire her fortitude in publishing her thoughts. But, I am not a school board member, so I have no reluctance in agreeing with her and taking it even further. My qualification for these comments is in raising 3 daughters in the public school system over a period of 21 years, given their age differences. In five states... more
To the Editor Each of us as Americans should be concerned at the administration's decision to try terrorists, who have confessed to planning 9-11, as common criminals in civilian court in New York. To add insult to injury, the security costs alone will approach $100,000,000 of taxpayer money... more
To the editor: The Police Advisory Board was created by the City Council in November 2007. The Board is appointed by the mayor, and serves without pay. The Board meets monthly and care is taken in the ordinance to assure that: 1. the public has access to the Board to hear concerns and... more

There is much unrest within our American people. They feel government has become too big. A government of the government, for the government, and by the government. It is not a democracy any more. This is the frustration Americans feel. It has nothing to do with Obama being black! It has to do with government being too powerful. The checks and balances our founding fathers put in place are being done away with. The constitution is being whittled away... more
To the editor: On Aug. 4, 1977, 32 years ago, I was in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany when President Carter with the support of the Congress, established the U.S. Department of Energy. Now, 32 years later, the DOE has grown to a bureaucracy employing 16,000 full-time employees plus another 100,000 contract employees. Their annual congressionally funded budget is $24.2 billion. Got it?... more
I moved two years ago from Lewisburg after living there many years. I raised my children there. I observe with concern the judgemental and condemning attitudes of those certain members who sit on the School Board at present. First of all, I would like to know what qualifications these certain members have to decide what is and is not acceptable with the Director of Schools. ... more
To the editor: I would like to take advantage of the "Letters to the Editor" space to address the low-life who stole a fish and wind chime left on my husband's grave in Berea Cemetery on Verona Road. They were placed there as a sign of love and respect for the person who has been interred there. By removing them, you are offending the senibilities of family members at a very sensitive time... more
To the Editor: Times are tough right now for residents of Marshall County. The closing of the GM plant hurts, and residents in all parts of the county have been hit with job losses. We have double digit unemployment and things could get worse before they get better... more
I read with great dismay the article on the front page (of the Nashville newspaper) headlined; "Gore, Hull statues voted down." The article dealt with the legislature voting down erecting statues for the two Nobel Laureates from Tennessee. I agree with not erecting one to Al Gore during his lifetime. ... more

In-patient physical therapy To the editor: I had bilateral knee surgery a few weeks ago. My doctor asked me where I was going when I left the hospital. I wanted to be closer to home, but didn’t want to go to the care center near home. My doctor told me about Marshall County Hospital as an in-patient for physical therapy. I was sold... more
Dear Editor: My name is Emily Langley. I live in Foley, Ala. which is located just north of Gulf Shores (a popular tourist destination). I am one block off of the major beach highway and one block to the north of a BP gas station where my dog was picked up on May 13 by a black SUV with TN plates that had Stone Mountain, Ga. tag holder... more
Dear editor: I have lived in Cornersville for about 74 years. During the past years, our little town has had some outstanding celebrations. However, none have been as great as Settler's Day. All of the days activities were so well planned. The food was delicious, the film was informative, the book was interesting, the music was good, seeing many old friends was thrilling, the outhouse race was hilarious, the fireworks were spectacular and all other things were greatly enjoyed by a very large number of people.. ... more

ear editor, The letter below was e-mailed to 15 of the 18 commissioners over two weeks ago. I wanted to send it to all 18 commissioners, but I couldn't get the other three commissioner's email. To my disappointment, not a single commissioner that voted in favor of the land fill expansion replied back nor did I receive one single reason of how the land fill expansion could help our community. Evidently, they are not concerned about what their constituent's think. I guess they felt that since I was in South Korea, that no response was necessary. To the Commissioners of Marshall County, I would like to say that I am very disappointed that you would not bother to at least respond and give me the consideration of an answer. Since you could not give me 10 good reasons of how this expansion could help our community, here are ten reasons why I think this expansion is going to be a detriment to our community and put our citizens at unnecessary risk: Marshall County has a history of contamination that includes the Rock Crusher landfill, the train wreck in the Verona area, the Heil Quaker spill, and the TCE contamination of a well in the Double Bridges area. Don't you think that we need to proceed with caution? The East Fork Globe Creek has been on Tennessee 303 d list since 2002, 2004, 2006 and it still hasn't been cleared up. more
A moment in time, forever frozen and framed by an eight-year-old boy, Christian Golczynski, who has been transformed into a man suddenly before his time by a tragic event. My heart ached and a tear fell as I looked at his picture in a recent newspaper as he accepted the sacred American flag that had draped his marine father's casket... more
