This year I have again not been asked to deliver any commencement addresses. Nevertheless, as in the past, I will use this space to share my wisdom with the latest crop of graduates. I once heard a commencement speaker urge students to brush their teeth. Whether she was grasping at a clever metaphor for handling life after college or she actually felt that a diploma along with good dental hygiene were keys to happiness, I couldn’t tell. Commencement speeches come in many flavors... more
I’ve always chafed at the term “love child” being reserved for the product of an illicit affair, thus implying that children born into a stable, committed home are merely property or tax deductions. Similarly, I have qualms about designating the warm months of 1967 as “THE Summer of Love.” (As Wikipedia condenses it, the Summer of Love was a social phenomenon involving as many as 100,000 people, mostly young people sporting hippie fashions and counter-culture views, converging in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.). ... more
If you’ve even heard of the Seth Rich story it’s probably as some wild conspiracy theory. That’s if the mainstream media have covered it at all. You’ve probably heard that Fox News pulled their recent story about him. That much is true, but that doesn’t change the mysterious facts around the case which carry much more weight than any Trump/Russia collusion... more
Two of my family’s old neighbors passed away a few weeks ago, and it makes me sad. My family’s old neighborhood was like many suburban neighborhoods that sprouted up in the 1960s. Many of the people who moved there grew up in the city. All of them wanted big yards in which their kids could play... more
American Airlines, which have us the first frequent flyer program, has been a travel innovator for years. Then - after collecting miles became popular and American’s customers invested considerable time and money building up their mileage account - American introduced the first devalued frequent flyer program with higher minimums for free travel!... more
A Harvard study published May 18 reveals what thoughtful Americans already knew: Extreme anti-Trump bias runs rampant in corporate media. The study found that CNN, CBS, and NBC produced more than 90 percent negative coverage during Trump’s first 100 days, followed by the New York Times at 87 percent, and the Washington Post, 83 percent. Only Fox News offered close to balanced coverage with 52 percent negative coverage... more
I have long told my radio audience that I am a professional dot connector. I don’t take news stories at face value. I look at everything that may be related to see if it being part of the story makes sense. I also look for odd stories that seem out of place that may be connected... more
“Seemingly yesterday, at a location just a couple of miles from my current home…” For me, that seems more appropriate than “Long ago in a galaxy far, far away” as I think about May 25 and the 40th anniversary of the debut of the first “Star Wars” movie... more
Back in the 1930s, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis famously referred to states as “laboratories of democracy.” But these days, those labs are looking less Albert Einstein and more Dr. Frankenstein. Enraged by the hundreds of thousands of women who peacefully took to the street in Washington in January, and the activists who camped out to block the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline, lawmakers in 20 states are debating or voting on more than 30 bills aimed at criminalizing or otherwise cracking down on the protest movements spawned by President Donald Trump’s administration.. ... more
The House is holding inconsequential hearings on why Donald Trump hired, and then fired, General Mike Flynn as National Security Director. Amid it all, we’ve learned that President Obama vaguely warned Trump about Flynn. “Given the importance of the job, the President thought there were better people for it, and that Flynn wasn’t up for the job,” a former senior Obama administration official told CNN... more
Since Adam’s fall in Eden, we humans find it easy to fall for lies. Especially in the absence of a moral filter which helps us differentiate between and navigate around what is right and wrong. Apparently, moral filters were in short supply in Germany in the 1930s when Nazism was on the rise. Adolf Hitler and his minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, launched an insidious campaign against the Jews. They spread their evil telling despicable lies blaming Jews for every malady on the planet... more
It’s a pretty sad day when you have to pass a law to compel police officials to enforce the law, but that’s just what they did in Texas. At least one municipality in Texas has routinely thumbed its nose at federal law and federal authorities when it comes to criminal illegal aliens. ... more
Even before I read the May 4 Wall Street Journal, I knew a little something about adventurous bicycle-related activities. When I was a teenager, a neighbor kid (one of my brother’s classmates) rode over to the house for a visit. Before saying goodbye, he confided that he had always wondered what it would feel like to ride with a flat tire; so he plunged his pocket knife into his tires and went THUMP THUMP THUMP back home... more
Ask the New York Times and they’ll tell you President Trump has been an abject failure in his first 100 days or so. Ask Trump and he’ll tell you he’s a “yuge” success. So, which is it? It depends on how you’re keeping score. If you’re scoring by how many presidential memoranda and executive orders have been written, Trump beats Obama 51-49... more
By Tom Purcell Every now and then, I come across items in the news that make me worry about the future of our country. Here’s one such item: CNNMoney reports that Americans are paying hundreds of dollars for dirty jeans. According to Nordstrom, a nutty retailer that sells such jeans, they “embody rugged, Americana workwear that’s seen some hard-working action with a crackled, caked-on muddy coating that shows you’re not afraid to get down and dirty.”... more
Last time they were in charge, Democrats created the dumpster fire we know as Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act, which is nothing more than a failed wealth redistribution experiment. Historians will look back at the Obama years and note the rise of Democrat Party lemmings who threw themselves off the Obamacare Cliff in a fit of melodramatic sanctimoniousness. ... more
Few things pollute the earth more than when leftists gather to protest. Let’s reminisce for old time’s sake. Leftists described the 2011 Occupy Movement as a breath of fresh air, although movement trash rats deposited their bowel movements on police cars and Zuccotti Park doorsteps. They also left tons of foul rubbish on streets. Democrats are all about handouts, so maybe they should have handed out doggie doo bags... more
Whether it’s a matter of hardwired instincts or dutifully handed-down rituals, we can all nod our heads and acknowledge that there are certain statements or behaviors that are typical of almost all mothers. Even in another 20 years, Mother’s Day will still bring to mind universally recognized traditions. But technology, economic conditions and social mores will bring subtle variations in the way mothers express themselves... more
Well, we made it through another May Day. This one was particularly boisterous because Donald Trump is president. We heard from the usual assortment of misfits and communists, and the usual violence accompanied the marches across the globe. What was especially evident this year is the May Day movement has never been so irrelevant... more
University of California at Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks, is either a raging liberal or an incompetent bureaucrat who has lost control of his campus. Granted, it’s not an easy job to manage a campus where decades of liberal entitlement have devolved into the rather predictable violent rage that now consumes the campus and town... more
