By Barbara Woods Guest Columnist As Marshall County prepares to kick off its recycling program, here are the answers to a number of commonly asked questions. What happens when something is recycled? When something is recycled, something new is made from something that has already been used for the same or another purpose... more
To the Editor: Wake up Tennesseans, seniors and your families! At some point in our lifetime, the pending legislation before the House (House Bill No. 4053) and the Senate (Senate Bill No. 4075) can affect your very lives. Summaries of these bills can be found at: www.legislature.state.tn.us/bills... more
To the Editor: I have been reading all the controversy over the landfill issue and the citizens' concern about their beautiful land and Richland Creek. Funny how none of these residents of Marshall County were concerned about the north end of the county having to live with two rock quarries and the effect it has on our landscape, our wells and most important the Duck River... more
To the Editor: This letter is for the mother who cried over her son's grave when the roses of her love for him were stolen. My wife and I lost our son nearly eight years ago. He was laid to rest in Lone Oak Cemetery in June 2000. We have kept flowers on his grave for every season since his death. We faithfully placed new arrangements for spring, fall and the Christmas season. more
To the Editor: Should a Martian suddenly find himself in our country and observe the media frenzy of the race for president, it seems to me that he would think that we believe that our total future depends on whomever is elected. Probably it would appear that we believe we would have no food, no job, and would not draw another breath if our favorite candidate should not be elected. Actually, in our wonderful government, the man/woman more
To the Editor: I wish to commend the Marshall County Tribune for their coverage of the issues regarding the proposed landfill to be located along Route 31-A south of Cornersville. I am not against the creation of landfills; however, the location of such entities ought not impose a current and/or future threat to citizens in the immediate area or the surrounding areas. more
By following their lead or example, it always assured me of getting the job done correctly or at least close to what they had in mind. more
Most folks around here have seen 'Song of the South,' so they know about tar-babies. more
To the Editor: A team can be defined as a group of players who play hard, with determination, who sacrifice, and who persevere to the end. A team player is one who is willing to recognize that there is no I in team and that TEAM equals Teamwork, Effort, Attitude and Motivation. The Marshall County Tigerettes exemplify what a team and a team player should be... more
We hear a lot this year from the American people that they would like to change the way we do business in Washington, D.C. That means that Congress should focus on big issues, come up with good principled ideas, and debate those principles in a bipartisan setting... more
I was raised by a grandmother and a mother, widowed at the age of 21, in the small community of Boston, Tenn. They instilled in me an admiration for the love and sincerity of Southern women. My mother was born in 1914, spent most of her life in retail, retired and died at the age of 88... more
When was the last time you were really hungry? I mean hungry from starvation and not from the fact you missed lunch because you were just too busy to stop and eat.?I thought so. Not too many, if any, starving people are reading this article. And do you know why you are not starving? The simple reason is because somewhere in this country farmers got up this morning and went to the fields and barn lots to make sure we all had enough to eat... more
A small South Central Tennessee town acquired Christmas decorations for its courthouse square, its major boulevard and nearby avenues at virtually no cost because of an inspired use of a federally funded economic development program. This 20-year-old story is worth re-telling now because it's the season, but also because here, there's the prospect of doing the same thing with the new business park on Mooresville Highway where a couple of on-going stories have revealed recurring efforts for more and better employment in Lewisburg.. ... more

To the Editor: The Christmas season has triggered some memories of things that I remember from my childhood. When I was growing up Mr. Fisher hadn't met Mr. Price and toys were NOT us! The 10-cent stores (Kuhns, Shainberg, Loyds, Redford) might have some balls, bats, a few dolls, a yo-yo, possibly a jump-rope... more

To the Editor: It has recently been called to my attention that our county school bus drivers are not required to keep film in the camera on their buses. What a tragedy and what a waste of the county taxpayer's money. These cameras are for the protection of our children and driver. ... more
In the spirit of public service during the Christmas shopping season, we offer this cautionary tale, complete with lyrics that should have been sung. A woman at a popular Lewisburg retail store checkout counter tried a cigarette lighter that plays music and, while holding the device near her ear to hear electronic music, she pushed a lever and ignited a flame, thereby setting her hair on fire... more
To the Editor: On July 18 our daughter Sadie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She was admitted into Vanderbilt Children's Hospital on July 19 and came home from the hospital on July 24. There are not enough words to tell everyone how much we appreciate everything that has more
