arshall County leaders are joining Bedford and other counties where the Duck River flows to coordinate an annual river cleanup out of concern for the environment and the natural resource. "We found out that Marshall County is the broken link along the Duck River and we want to fix that," County Mayor Joe Boyd Liggett told several dozen volunteers interested in improving the Duck River. "We need your help to do it." more
Three municipalities in Marshall County asked a committee of county commissioners on Wednesday evening to recommend revenue sharing from the county's adequate facilities tax and the committee declined to vote on the request. Miffed by the lack of action, Lewisburg Water and Sewer Department Director Larry Jones said that leaves the city, Chapel Hill and Cornersville with the option of taking the question to voters through a referendum that could be put on the ballot by circulating a petition. more
Plans for a second quarry near Pottsville have been granted another procedural step toward development of an operation for which two businessmen have invested about $6.5 million. With a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the Marshall County Board of Zoning Appeals granted a special exception for Marshall County Stone LLC, a business that's faced protestors at previous meetings. more
Marshall County commissioners on Tuesday are to consider supporting or overriding County Mayor Joe Boyd Liggett's veto of their 11-7 vote to permit expansion of Cedar Ridge Landfill. Meanwhile, campaign rhetoric from last August's county commission election has returned and a former commissioner who lost by 30 votes offers reason to believe a veto override vote might be 12-6. Concrete blocks were thrown through the windows of two motor vehicles in Lewisburg on Tuesday, according to city police reports. One of the vandalized vehicles was parked at 543 Colburn Drive when the incident occurred, police reported. A purse with cash and the owner's credit card were reportedly taken. . . . . more
Several volunteer fire departments fought two barn fires on Wednesday and Thursday when bales of hay burned. The back of a house at 616 2nd Ave. was fully engulfed in flames at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday when the Lewisburg Fire Department arrived, according to Firefighter Larry Baxter.
