The Marshall County School Board narrowed the field of candidates for director of schools from five to two Tuesday night. The board agreed to continue its investigation of candidates Stan Curtis and Spurgeon Banyard. Members of the Lewisburg Elks Lodge made a special presentation Saturday to the family of Staff Sergeant Todd Nunes, who was killed in 2004 in Kirkuk, Iraq, while deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Elks Past Exalted Ruler Bryant Baugher presented a Medal of Valor, American flag and certificate of merit to Nunes' wife Christy and their children, Larissa and Alex Nunes. ... more
Lewisburg officials want to know if businesses that were given a property tax break have kept their end of the bargain by hiring the number of employees they promised they would when they got the tax deal. Cornersville City Hall's meeting area was filled to capacity well before the advertised start time of the meeting of the board of mayor and aldermen. On the agenda was a change to the speed limits on the approaches to town. Town Adminstrator Taylor Brandon said they have had a "steady stream of complaints" since they lowered the speed limits at the south end, so a motion was approved to change these and also to allow 45 mph on the Lynnville Hill where it comes in to Cornersville on Hwy 129. ... more
CHAPEL HILL -- Public safety should improve soon for area residents and motorists here because of a town board decision on Monday to help fund a new ambulance station. CHAPEL HILL -- Widening of Mooresville Highway and the portion of Lewisburg's bypass from East Commerce Street to the Marshall County EMS headquarters are two projects with funding plans in place by state officials. However, a proposal to widen State Route 64 to Shelbyville is not. A state official has suggested that local transportation leaders cut those plans into smaller projects so that they might be included in later plans by the Tennessee Department of Transportation... more

With more and more youngsters playing soccer, Lewisburg's City Council wants to improve soccer field facilities here with a building that has locker rooms, storage, a concession stand and restrooms. To do so, the council is scheduled next week to authorize Mayor Bob Phillips to apply for a $30,000 grant from the state. It's one of three applications Phillips may sign, but if the building is built, it will be seen by and serve more people than what the other grants fund... more
Mardi Gras came to Lewisburg Tuesday. At NHC Oakwood, the staff and patients dressed up with beads, feathers, crowns and masks. The lunch menu featured fried chicken, red beans and rice, and king cake and bread pudding for dessert. Bill Beech, 90, was among the celebrants, with a badge identifying him as a "Golden Links Volunteer." Beech and his late wife retired to Lewisburg in 1999 after 30 years in New Orleans. ... more

Marshall County has been awarded another federal grant to prevent stormwater erosion of rural roads, according to federal and county officials speaking this week at County Roads Superintendent Jerry Williams' office. The program here, estimated to cost $591,800, is to improve 41 sites. Most are where a roadbed is threatened by a meandering stream or by recurring flooding. The Tennessee Elks held the Middle Tennessee District Hoop Shoot shoot off in January at New Prospect School. Devan Hasty came in first place in the 12- to 13-year-old girls category and also received the trophy for getting the most hoops for girls ages 8 to 13.
