To the Editor: Is more money stolen with a pencil, and threats of water service being cut off if not paid, happening right before local city officials, local and state law enforcement's eyes each month? Is that happening, against Lewisburg's law, the Lewisburg City Charter or even the Lewisburg city sewer ordinances? (Read page 17.) Copper was stolen from a cell phone tower near the south end of the county before Christmas. Chad Whitaker, an employee of Verizon Wireless, reported to the Marshall County Sheriff's Department that between Dec. 14 and 22, someone stole two two-hole copper lugs, one three-foot copper ground bar and approximately 40 feet of 10.2 copper ground wire from the Verizon tower on Charlie Thomas Road. An accidental shooting endangered a child and spoiled Christmas for two Marshall County men last week. Marshall County Sheriff's Department Deputy Matt Owens was dispatched to an address on Raylee Drive, Chapel Hill, just after 1 a.m. Dec. 24. The homeowner, Mitchell West, told Owens he and his friend Nolan Garcia had been wrestling, and "once they began to struggle with the weapon it discharged and struck Nolan in the lower abdomen and exited through the lower back," Owens wrote in his report... more

A stormy school board discussion has led to a verbal reprimand by the panel to the director of schools. The 6-2 vote Thursday last week reprimanded Roy Dukes in connection with a state audit and the refund of federal money. Lewisburg's Water and Wastewater Board members on Thursday agreed to pursue billing cost savings and maintained their position on sewer rates when a customer pressed his point again on how fees for that service are calculated.
