CHAPEL HILL -- Town water service customers this month may start making installment payments to their Air Evac helicopter ambulance service subscriptions by adding $5 to their monthly utility bills. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously voted in December to endorse the arrangement and permit collection of helicopter ambulance service fees on the town's monthly billing system. SHELBYVILLE -- The temporary closure of Cedar Ridge Landfill at Lewisburg has prompted Bedford County to join a regional Inter-local Solid Waste Authority with Lincoln, Giles and Franklin counties and Tullahoma. Trash from Bedford County convenience centers used to be trucked to Cedar Ridge, owned by Waste Management, which would still accept it for $30 per ton at a Maury County transfer station. To the Editor: I am writing concerning the sewer rates charged by the Lewisburg Water and Wastewater Department to individuals who are not hooked on to the sewer system. I am not hooked on to the sewer, but I am charged a sewer fee each month. In speaking with my neighbors, who are not connected to the sewer, I have discovered that we are being charged varying rates for the sewer fee each month. ... more
