The price of copper is so high these days that when Lewisburg Electric Service sells wire it's replacing, the proceeds pay for practically everything except the labor of LES crewmen who'd be paid doing something else anyway. The LES Board of Directors was advised of the cost savings that are being realized as nearly two miles of copper wires are being replaced with aluminum wires that include a mix of conductive alloys. It only seems like Americans have gone crazy for ribbons: yellow for returning soldiers; pink to find a cure for breast cancer; and now blue to deal with child abuse. Volunteers now advocating blue ribbon displays, however, are unanimous in their desire to deal with child abuse and take steps to stop crimes that would appear to be everywhere. Lewisburg's city manager has expanded a Manchester firm's service contract because the governor eliminated the Local Planning Division of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (ECD). In recent years, Kristin Costanzo, a local planner in the ECD office in Nashville, provided Lewisburg planning commissioners with professional advice on how to deal with planning and zoning issues. It's a frequently arcane, but sometimes a controversial and emotional topic, as city councilmen realized again Tuesday when two residents opposed establishment of a crematory on Yell Road. more
An ebb and flow of well-wishers went to the McKnight Center adjacent to First United Methodist Church on Wednesday afternoon providing personal tribute to Tommy Higdon's three decades of public service. "This is the party he didn't get the first time he won" election as Marshall County Court Clerk, his loving wife, Betty Jo Higdon, said as the two-hour party was coming to an end. That campaign in 1981 took such a toll on Higdon, she said, that after the race was over, he "went home to sleep." more
