The Lewisburg Police Department didn't have a four-wheel-drive vehicle until this summer when it took possession of a Humvee from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. Police Chief Chuck Forbis obtained the vehicle - at no cost to the city - through a program he used in his previous job with the Sarasota, Fla., Sheriff's Department, and he's willing to help other area departments use the program to get surplus military equipment... more

Property tax breaks for factories are again being considered by city councilmen, but at least one of them wants contracts to be more specific about requiring jobs created in conjunction with the financial incentive granted by elected leaders. Several residents have called Councilman Robin Minor complaining about employment practices by businesses expanding or being established here with a reduction in city and county property taxes. DETROIT -- General Motors and the United Auto Workers were negotiating a new labor contract Thursday when the future of GM's Spring Hill plant was an issue. Contract talks continued beyond a Wednesday night deadline as both sides agreed to extend terms of the current contract, according to the Detroit News. A five-year lease-purchase agreement for General Motors' Northfield building at Spring Hill was signed last week between General Motors and the South Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance. Worker training programs are conducted in the old Saturn headquarters that's being acquired with money from the state. An attorney practicing in Smyrna plans to open a winery just east of Momma's Country nightclub on the north side of New Columbia Highway, he said Wednesday. A Lewisburg man was sentenced to eight years in prison last week, after he pled guilty to the charge of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor. Another new business is anticipated at Lewisburg's Business Park on Mooresville Highway where 50 jobs will become available, city leaders were told Monday when expansion of a business here was announced as creating more jobs.
