Vikings halt Marshall County’s winning streak

The Marshall County Tigers came into Friday’s senior night contest versus Community riding an eight-game winning streak and an undefeated District 12-AA mark, but the Vikings busted both with a tough 65-56 win.

“Yes that ended our winning streak, but it was good because I want to see how we will bounce back from a setback,” MCHS coach Lavon King said.

The first place Tigers still control their own destiny and have four district games remaining versus Giles County, Forrest, Murfreesboro Central Magnet School, and Nolensville.

“We have to get ready for Giles now, it’s a huge rivalry game and the stands will be full again,” King said.

Devonte Davis had another big night for the Tigers with a team-leading 21 points and Bryson Hughes was also in double figures in the scoring column with 10 points, including all three of the Tigers’ 3-pointers in the contest.

Kaamil Hazel added eight points, Silas Hurt had seven, Omari Alred and Jayden Hart had four points apiece, and Jaamil Hazel had a deuce.

Community’s Will Reed was the star of the game with a game-high 25 points and a monster 13-for-14 effort from the free throw line, including 9-of-10 in the closing moments of the crucial fourth period.

“Reed is a tough player,” King said. “He was the remaining starter from that team last year that was very successful last year.”

Evan Petrie and Jackson Bailey were both in double figures with 11 points apiece, Stratton Lovorn added a pair of 3-pointers and eight points, while Maki Fleming and Emery Smith had five points apiece for the Vikings.

Kaamil Hazel had the first four points in the game for the Tigers with a field goal and two free throws as MCHS had its only first quarter lead at 4-2.

Reed scored seven points in the opening period as the Vikings eked out a one-point 11-10 lead after the first eight minutes on the hardwood.

Jaamil Hazel put the Tigers back in front as he scored to open the second period, but a 10-4 Community run, capped off by three Reed free throws after being fouled beyond the 3-point arc made it a 21-16 contest.

Alred scored before Community went back-to-back on 3-pointers by Lovorn and Fleming to make it a nine-point game at 27-18, but a Hughes 3-pointer calmed the storm and the Vikings went on to lead 30-22 at the half.

Hughes went off to begin the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers and a free throw to singlehandedly cut the Community lead to one point at 30-29.

The Vikings pulled away again with a 9-0 run capped off by a Petrie steal and score to make it a 39-29 contest with 1:51 remaining in the third period.

Community maintained a 10-point lead entering the fourth period before the Tigers surged with Davis, Kaamil Hazel, and Alred coming up with field goals to slice the Community lead to four points at 43-39, forcing a Vikings timeout with 6:52 remaining in the game.

Davis had 12 points in the fourth quarter for the Tigers, who would not quit as they kept to within six points of the lead most of the stanza.

But, they kept fouling the wrong guy down the stretch as Reed made them pay from the free throw line by making nine charity shots and a bucket in the last three minutes of the game to seal the nine-point win for Unionville.

“They did a good job of defending some of our sets and we had trouble scoring in the second quarter,” King said. “I think we used a lot of energy to cut it back down to three and they hit free throws down the stretch.”
