Tigerettes take down Lady Bobcats in key district battle

The Lady Bobcats invaded Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday night to take on the Marshall County High School Tigerettes in a key District 12-AA matchup.

The Tigerettes, with Karlye Wiser blistering the nets for six 3-pointers, kept the Lady Bobcats at arm’s length and sent Giles County home on the losing end of a 50-42 score.

“I’ve been waiting to breakout like this, I try to hit the bottom of the net, and I don’t like bank shots,” Wiser said. “We played really good tonight and their number 10 (Hannah Hill), she’s really hard to stop, she’s got a killer step back shot, she steps in then jumps back, it’s hard to defend.”

Hill poured in 27 points for the Lady Bobcats to lead all scorers.

The Lady Bobcats struck first after controlling the tip when Hill made a jump shot, but Kelsey Keiler matched it to tie the score at 2-2.

Both teams swapped 3-pointers with Wiser getting her first of six.

Hill wrapped up the first quarter scoring with two baskets to give the Lady Bobcats a 9-6 lead.

The Tigerettes roared back to grab the lead with Wiser raining down three more 3-pointers and Keiler pouring in eight points.

The Lady Bobcats battled to stay close with Hill adding a basket and two free throws along with Amanda Britton’s 3-pointer to keep Giles County within striking distance as they trailed by six points at halftime.

The third quarter was an even battle on equal terms as Hill continued her assault on the basket with eight points and Wiser knocking down two more 3-pointers.

Hannah Davis got into the mix as she contributed two baskets and a free throw in helping the Tigerettes maintain their six-point lead when the third quarter ended.

“I was glad Hannah did good tonight because coach Steely preaches and preaches – inside out, inside out, get the ball into the post,” Wiser said. “We did a little bit of everything tonight”.

Davis scored seven fourth quarter points after the Lady Bobcats went to a man-to-man defense as she helped the Tigerettes increase their lead to nine points.

Hill showed no sign of slowing down as she added nine more points with three baskets and three free throws.

Forced to foul as time slipped away from the Lady Bobcats, the Tigerettes kept Giles County at bay and when the horn sounded they maintained their hold on second place in District 12-AA with the victory.

“It felt good to answer in a bunch of different ways against their defense, Karlye shot the ball well against their zone and when they went man-to-man our inside game with Kelsey and Hannah stepped up,” MCHS coach David Steely said. “We go to Chapel Hill against Forrest Friday night, so we’ll celebrate this win, but I assure you we will be ready to play.”

“It’s a big week for us, playing Giles County and Forrest.”
