For the last year, area songwriters have been singing once a month at Marcy Jo’s. not for their own supper, but as a benefit for the county’s Meals on Wheels program.
Local singer/songwriter Scott Southworth started the monthly sessions back in January, bringing singers and songwriters together at Marcy Jo’s on the third Thursday of every month.
The bakery and coffee house on Highway 99 stays open for dinner that one night of the month, offering a dinner special and plenty of entertainment.
Next Thursday, Dec. 19, is this months session, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Appropriately for this month, songwriter Randy Brooks will be sitting in for the evening. Brooks is best known for his song, “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer,” which has become a Christmas classic.
There is no cover charge but 100 percent of tips, from the restaurant and performers, go to support the Marshall County Meals on Wheels program.
Southworth said that the evenings had raised around $2,000 for Meals on Wheels in the first year.
“Anything you’re providing is directly benefitting people,” he said of the evening. “The dollars go a long way.”
The program delivers meals to seniors in their homes, providing not only nutrition, but also the personal contact and safety checks that contribute to them being able to remain at home.
Southworth noted that the waiting list for Meals on Wheels in the county was lengthy.
