CHAPEL HILL — Cornersville jumped on county rival Forrest on Friday night and jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but there would be no denying the Rockets on Senior Night.
Forrest rallied with some timely hitting to down the Bulldogs, 8-5.
Cornersville’s Gage Lovell didn’t waste any time as he drew a lead-off walk in the game’s first plate appearance.
He later scored on a RBI single by Tanner Mullins and the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead with a second RBI single in the inning by Peyton Cherry.
Cornersville worked out of a jam in the bottom of the inning, turning a 6-4-3 double play to leave the Rocekts scoreless.
Lovell again was the culprit in the top of the third inning as the Bulldogs added to their lead.
With two outs, Lovell doubled to left and then scored on a RBI single to by Mason Callahan, bumping the Cornersville lead to 3-0.
But the hot-hitting Rockets could only stay scoreless for so long.
In the bottom of the second, Kain Moses doubled to deep center field and Carter Walk singled in the next at-bat.
Both scored went on to score, with Walk scoring on a sacrifice fly by Austin Lampley and Walk stealing home.
Lampley, who got the start on the mound for the Rockets, followed with a 1-2-3 third inning, which set up a four-run third inning that allowed the Rockets take a slim lead.
In the four-run third, the Rockets batted around and connected for five hits, including a pair of doubles.
The see-saw game continued as the Bulldogs pulled within one run of the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
Lovell connected on his second single of the night and drove in the tying run before Callahan ground out to first, scoring Blaine Woodard.
While the Bulldogs had rallied to cut the Rocket lead to a 6-5, Forrest plated a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Riley Durbin drew a lead off walk and Brayden Bowyer followed him on base when he was hit by a pitch.
With two on and two out, it was senior Kain Moses who mashed a two RBI double to left that padded the lead for the Rockets.
After Lampley pitched four innings, Bowyer took over on the bump and pitched the final three innings.
Lampley gave up five runs on six hits, but struck out five, while Bowyer struck out five against three hits.
Lovell pitched 2 2/3 innings for the Bulldogs and was tagged for six runs on eight hits while Peyton Cherry worked the final 3 1/3 innings.
Cherry gave up two runs on two hits, while striking out two.
At the plate, the Rockets connected for 10 hits against the Bulldogs, with Moses’ 3-for-4 night leading the way.
All three of Moses’ hits went for doubles, while Lampley and Bowyer also doubled.
Andrew Timmons went just 1-for-2 at the plate for the Rockets, but drove in three runs.
For the Bulldogs, Lovell was the top earner at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and a RBI.
