Raiders hand Bulldogs fourth straight loss to begin season

Cornersville welcomed longtime rival Richland at Cornersville High School on Tuesday night and the Raiders took advantage of poor shooting and shoddy ball handling by the Bulldogs to secure a convincing 56 -24 victory over the winless Bulldogs.

Kaden Allen led the Bulldogs with seven points and Michael Ashley and Wallace Francis chipped in five points apiece.

Cornersville’s Kaden Allen gave the Bulldogs a short-lived 2-0 lead before the Raiders worked the ball inside and Stevie Ballinger attempted a shot, but was fouled in the act and sank both free throws to put Richland on the board.

Ballinger repeated it on the next Richland possession and once more sank both free throws to put Richland in the lead 4-2.

The Raiders then went on a nine-point run to extend their lead to 11 points at 13-2.

With Ashley leading the way by canning a 3-pointer and a basket and Allen scoring again they closed the gap to four points at 13-9.

A buzzer-beating 3-point basket by Tyrell Randolph rattled through the hoop as the first quarter horn sounded, putting Richland up 16-9.

The second quarter was where the game completely turned in the Raiders favor as they outscored the Bulldogs 25-0 and when the horn sounded the Bulldogs were on the wrong end of a 41-9 halftime score.

Ballinger again was the culprit as he added eight points and Daniel Nicholson added seven to lead the Raiders in the second quarter.

Cornersville’s Eli Welch, suffering the effects of a root canal, was unable to play at his best and the Bulldogs suffered accordingly.

The third and fourth quarters were not as difficult for the Bulldogs, but the damage had already been done.

The Bulldog bench finished the game as did the Raiders (5-0), who emptied their bench with the younger players getting to play and gain floor experience.

“We’ve got to get mentally and physically tougher,” Cornersville coach Peyton Newton said. “I am going to challenge them to get that toughness. We’ll see how it goes.”

The Bulldogs (0-4) must regroup as Santa Fe (1-1) comes calling Friday night.
