Late Cascade barrage sinks Rockets

The Forrest Rockets took the pitch on the Lions Club Memorial Field in Chapel Monday night versus Cascade looking for their first win of the season.

All signs were pointing to a win or at least a tie as the first 65 minutes were played to a 1-1 contest before the Champions went on a wild scoring barrage to win going away 7-1.

Forrest’s Chris Baker scored the first goal of the game off a perfect cross from Chris Davis at the 36:35 mark of the first half and then the Rockets defended their end of the field for several minutes as the Champions looked for the equalizer.

Cascade pressured the Rockets and had several shots on goal that were nixed by Forrest keeper Josh Rumley.

The Rockets managed to counter a couple of times, but it was the Campions who scored second as Drake Hodge found an opening and drilled a shot top net to make it 1-1 with 16:43 remaining in the first half.

Rumley came up with a pair of nice saves and the Rockets had a scoring chance when CJ Sanchez was fouled on a run and a free kick was awarded at the 1:21 mark of the first half.

Hayden Milligan took the kick and sent a nice curler inside the box, but Cascade keeper Michael Anderson made a leaping interception and first half ended in a 1-1 draw.

The two squads battled back and forth at the outset of the second half with both teams squandering scoring opportunities on a pair of unsuccessful Cascade corner kicks and with 25:13 remaining in the game, the Rockets could not muster an accurate shot to an open goal and the game remained knotted at 1-1.

Time kept on ticking away before Timothy West came up with the go-ahead goal for Cascade inside the 21-minute mark of the game.

West did not let up as the Champions’ striker scored two more goals in three minutes to post the hat trick and put Cascade in front 4-1 with 16:38 remaining in the contest.

With the air out of the Rockets’ balloon, Cascade added three more goals to secure the District 6-A win and move to (3-1, 2-0) on the season while Forrest dropped to (0-5, 0-2).
