After capturing the District 12-AA Tournament title last week, the Forrest Lady Rockets hosted District 11-AA Tournament runner-up Camden Central Monday night in the Region 6-AA Tournament opener at the Field of Dreams in Chapel Hill.

The three-time state champions took care of business in quick fashion, run-ruling the Lady Lions 10-0 in five innings to move on to the region title game Wednesday night versus the Nolensville Lady Knights.

“Coming in to this game we didn’t know what they had so you have to treat each game as they can beat you,” Forrest coach Shelby Lightfoot said. “Coach Ricky (Stinnett) gave his pregame speech and he said hey, there are a lot of memorable moments in your life and you don’t want this to be one of them if you lose here, so the pressure is there and if you go in prepared you feel okay about it.”

Lady Rockets smash Camden, earn state sectional berth

The Lady Rockets and Lady Knights will meet for the fifth time this season with Forrest holding a 3-1 advantage.

Nolensville travelled to Waverly where they shocked the District 11-AA champions 10-0 as Rylan Smith hurled a no-hitter versus the Lady Tigers.

“We were not surprised about that looking at Camden and Waverly’s record,” Lightfoot said. “We also know the first time you go against Nolensville’s pitcher (Smith) and if you not prepared, she can overwhelm you.”

“They (Nolensville) might have got six hits off Ashley the last time, but I feel like an inning or two we gave them some hits, so if we shut that down a little bit, I feel good about the pitching and we will be ready to go.”

Both teams also qualified for state sectional games on Friday night.

Camden was playing without District 11-AA Pitcher of the Year Alix Hampton and Forrest took advantage as they banged out 13 hits off backup Trinity Woodard.

Jenna Blanton went 3-for-4 and Karley Daughrity, Katelyn Helmick, Abby Ferguson, and Maggie Daughrity all went 2-for-3 in the contest.

Macyn Kirby and Briley Burnham both went 1-for-3.

District 12-AA Pitcher of the Year Ashley Milligan turned in another dominating performance in the circle for Forrest, giving up just one hit while striking out 14 and walking one Camden batter.

Both pitchers set down the opponents 1-2-3 in the first inning and after Milligan struck out the side in order in the top of the second inning, Forrest got on the board in the home half of the inning as Milligan drew a leadoff walk.

Addison Bunty came in as a courtesy runner for Milligan and stole second base with one out.

A passed ball sent Bunty to third and she pranced home on a Helmick RBI single to left field.

Milligan whiffed all three Camden batters she faced in the top of the third before Forrest took a 5-0 lead in the home half of the stanza.

Blanton led off with a perfect bunt single and stole second base.

Karley Daughrity was hit by a Woodard pitch and Camden decided to walk Laura Mealer to load the bases and Milligan came through with an RBI sacrifice fly.

After a popup to third base, Helmick drilled a two-run single and Ferguson followed with an RBI base knock to put the Lady Tigers in a big hole.

“Katelyn’s last three games she’s been doing well and has been big in that hole,” Lightfoot said. “That’s why earlier we moved Milligan and Helmick down so we good get some production down there.”

“We had to move Milligan back up to protect Mealer a little bit, but anytime your bottom of the lineup produces, that’s how you win.”

Milligan mowed down Camden with three consecutive strikeouts in the top of the fourth inning and Forrest added three more runs in the home half of the stanza on a two-run single by Karley Daughrity and a run-scoring single by Kirby to make it an 8-0 contest.

Milligan struck out the first batter she faced in the top of the fifth before Audrey Jackson broke up the perfect game with a base on balls and Woodard followed with a clean base hit up the middle to spoil the no-no.

Lightfoot went out to the circle for a talk with her senior pitcher before Milligan struck out the next two Camden batters to end the inning.

“Every time we get in the fifth or sixth, I hate to say it, it gets a little bit in her head that she has that perfect game,” Stinnett said. “She gets a little bit mechanical on me and that’s what I went and talked to her about and I said, hey you can’t have that in your head, you have to go out and throw the game you’ve been throwing and stop thinking so much and that’s what she did.”

Forrest finished up the win in the home half of the inning as Ferguson singled to left to lead off the frame and was sacrificed to second by Burnham.

Maggie Daughrity followed with an RBI single and Blanton ripped a base hit to center field.

Both runners moved up on a passed ball before Karley Daughrity ended the contest with a walk off single to left field.
