FAYETTEVILLE — It was an epic battle among two teams that just refused to lose on Tuesday night between Fayetteville City and Cornersville.
It took not one, not two, not three or four, but five overtimes to decide a winner before the Lady Tigers hit a three-pointer at the buzzer at the end of the fifth extra period to give Fayetteville an 83-82 win over Cornersville.
The game was highlighted by Fayetteville freshman Trinity Dixon’s career night of 40 points, which included five treys.
While Dixon provided the fireworks on the offensive end of the court for the Lady Tigers, Cornersville had plenty of heavy hitters on its side as well.
Ady Gentry and Anna Wood combined for 40 to lead the Lady ‘Dawgs.
Fayetteville built at 13-10 lead by the end of the first quarter and both teams chipped in 14 points, which left the Lady Tigers up, 27-24 at the intermission.
A barrage of treys by Cornersville evened the game at 36 by the end of the third period.
As the game progressed, fouls continued to pile up for both teams and both squads were able to make the most of their time at the charity stripe in the extra periods.
Cornersville connected on 18-of-21 free throws in overtime, while Fayetteville made 11-of-21 attempts in the five extra periods.
After the heartbreak on Tuesday, Cornersville fell in another overtime heartbreaker on Friday night to Eagleville, with the Lady Eagles claiming a 46-43 win over the Lady ‘Dawgs.
Against Eagleville, Ady Gentry led the way with 15 points for Cornersville, while Alicia Polk and Anna Wood each scored eight.
Cornersville is back on the hard court on Tuesday at Community.
