The Forrest Rockets just could not muster up enough offense in Tuesday night’s District 12-AA contest at Unionville and it cost them as the Vikings won easily 58-39, handing Chapel Hill its 14th loss in a row.

“We had our chances and displayed some good offense spurts throughout the game, but when going against Community you can't have too many offensive lapses with their speed and height,” Forrest coach Corey Bishop said.

The second place Vikings (12-9, 5-2) have won 11 out of the last 12 games over the Rockets (2-15, 0-7), who will try to break the losing streak at first place Marshall County (12-5, 6-1) Friday night.

“We have been in this type of situation before and when everyone counted us out last year, we were still in the region tournament,” Bishop said. “We are going to keep working hard behind the scenes in practice to improve every day.”

Forrest seniors Walker Herring and Cole Perryman were the only Rockets in double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.

Hunter Bennett added seven points, Deason Jones had four, Andrew Timmons netted two points, and Keaton Curtis had one made free throw for the Rockets.

Community’s Jackson Bailey poured in a game-high 23 points while Evan Petrie had 13 points, and Will Reed was also in double figures with 10 points.

Stratton Lovorn added five, Maki Fleming four, and Jacob Cooper had one 3-pointer for the Vikings, who had a superb night at the free throw line, going 15-for-17.

The Rockets fell behind 5-0 early before Bennett finally scored with 4:11 remaining in the first quarter.

Forrest did not score again until Herring knocked down a low post bucket at the end of the stanza with the Rockets trailing 13-4.

The Vikings went on a 9-0 run to begin the second period and took a 22-6 lead before Perryman and Bennett scored on back-to-back trips down the floor.

Forrest managed to cut the Community lead to 10 points at the half, trailing 25-15.

Community came out of the halftime break on fire, going off on a 12-0 run that was capped off by Cooper’s 3-pointer to make it 35-15.

The Vikings went on to lead by 21 points until Perryman and Herring ended the stanza with back-to-back field goals.

The Rockets scored 13 points in the fourth quarter on six Herring points in the paint, one foul shot by Curtis, and 3-pointers by Bennett and Jones, but the Vikings netted 18 in the period in the 19-point win.

“We still have two weeks left to improve and I think that I coach a great group of kids who are eager and ready to make a run in the end,” Bishop said.
