Mr. Horace Hill, Jr., age 78, of Chapel Hill, Tennessee, died Wednesday, April 28, 2021. Mr. Hill was born in Marshall County and was a son of the late William Horace Hill, Sr. and Ruby Katherine Mealer Hill. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, William Coleman “Billy” Hill; brother, James Wallace “Wally” Hill; and sister-in-law, Willa Dene Overton.
Horace, Jr. was a graduate of Forrest High School Class of 1961 and was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. He was the former owner of Chapel Hill Shell, worked for many years for Arnold Bros. Oil in Chapel Hill and retired from Heil-Quaker Corp., Security Division. Horace was very active in community affairs and served as a member of the Board of Alderman of the Town of Chapel Hill before being elected as Mayor of Chapel Hill, a position he held from 1990 until 2001. He was currently a member of the Board of Alderman for the Town of Chapel Hill. In 2019, Mr. Hill was recognized as Citizen of the Year for the Town of Chapel Hill.
Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Teresa Davidson Hill, Chapel Hill, TN; children, Michael (Dee) Hill, Rayville, LA, Lisa Howell, Chapel Hill, TN, Melinda (Jimmy) Whitsett, Cornersville, TN; sister, Katherine (Wally) Haines, Chapel Hill, TN; grandchildren, Shelley Morgan, Amber (Brandon) McCowin, Jessica (Zac) Smith, Lenzie Howell, Sarah Howell, Ashleigh Whitsett, Maggie (Brad) Hammack; seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Visitation with family members will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2021 at Lawrence Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Swanson Cemetery in Chapel Hill with Rev. Larry Chatman officiating. There will be no visitation on Saturday prior to services. Burial will immediately follow in Swanson Cemetery.
