Griffin to speak at Historical Society

The Marshall County Historical Society will meet Sunday afternoon, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. in the museum at the Hardison School Annex, 230 College Street. The guest speaker will be Jean Hart Griffin, who will discuss the Veterans History Project and her interviews with local veterans.

Launched in 2000 by an act of Congress, the Veterans History Project collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. The project includes all wars and conflicts from World War I forward. The videos, interviews, and personal writings will be housed at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Mrs. Griffin and her nephew, Jeremy Moorehead, Marshall County veterans service officer, personally delivered some of these findings to Washington, D.C. last June. Mr. Moorehead will provide an overview of the services his office provides to Marshall County veterans during the presentation on Sunday.

The daughter of Julius and Reba Welch Hart, Mrs. Griffin grew up in Petersburg, Tennessee and graduated Cornersville High School. She spent over 40 years in the financial services industry, primarily focusing on project management as part of Bank of America’s Merger and Acquisition Technology Transition Team. She has lived in Middle Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia and returned to the Lewisburg area eight years ago.

She is a graduate of Leadership Marshall, an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she plays in the handbell choir, and an active member and past president of the Lewisburg Rotary Club, where she chairs the annual Christmas Tour of Homes. She has traveled extensively throughout the United States and to many foreign countries.

It was during one of these trips that she first learned about the Veterans History Project. Her enthusiasm for the project was shared by the local Veteran’s Outreach Program and the Marshall County Historical Society, both of which are always looking for ways to preserve the stories of local veterans.

The historical society invites you to join them in this free and open meeting. The public is encouraged to bring photographs or diaries of local veterans.
