After a five-point home win over Murfreesboro Central Magnet School in the District 12-AA opener on Tuesday, January 12, the Forrest Lady Rockets entertained Community on Friday night at Chapel Hill.

Forrest senior Laura Mealer, who led all scorers in the game with 19 points, opened up the game with a drive to the hoop for two points.

Brianna Beech came up with a 3-pointer for the Viqueens, but Mealer matched the feat and the first quarter turned in to a back-and-forth affair for much of the period with the Lady Rockets holding a 12-8 lead late after back-to-back baskets by Mealer and Addison Bunty.

Haley Mitchell scored twice, and MJ Simmons knocked down a bucket in the low post as the Viqueens responded with a 6-0 run to end the first quarter with a 14-12 lead.

Alex Davenport kicked off the second quarter with a three-point play the old-fashioned way for Forrest, but those were the only points the home team scored in the stanza.

Luckily for the Lady Rockets, Community only scored five points in the second quarter and led 19-15 at the half.

Mealer had a pair of baskets to start the third period and Simmons came up with a three-point play in the paint before Bunty scored to put Forrest in front 21-20 with 5:32 remaining in the stanza.

An 8-3 Community run gave the Viqueens a 28-24 lead before Mealer nailed two free throws.

Beech was fouled on a 3-point attempt, but only made one foul shot and after a Forrest turnover, Community’s Zoe Dixon scored the last field goal of the third period and the Viqueens took a 31-26 lead to the fourth quarter.

Dixon came up big again, throwing down a 3-pointer to cap off a 7-2 Community run to begin the final period to lead by 10 points and force a Forrest timeout with 6:03 remaining in the game.

The Lady Rockets tried to chip away at the lead, but Community matched them at every turn as Forrest did not get any closer than eight points at 41-33 on two Bunty free throws.

The Viqueens held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest and improved to 7-6 on the season and 2-0 in district play.

Bunty ended up with seven points, Macyn Kirby and Megan Mealer added four points apiece, Davenport had three and Ryann Lewis finished with one point.

Simmons led Community with 18 points and Breanna Whitaker was also in double figures with 10.

Beech, Dixon, and Mitchell all had seven points and Addison Brothers scored a deuce.

The Lady Rockets (4-7, 1-1) traveled to Huntland on Saturday and were stomped by the Lady Hornets, 64-27.
