The Cornersville Bulldogs played host to the Fayetteville City Tigers Monday afternoon in a District 8-A contest.

The Bulldogs were attempting to extend a winning streak that twin wins over Culleoka last Thursday and Friday had produced, but the bats of Fayetteville proved far too much for the young Cornersville team as the Tigers exploded for seven runs in the first and second innings in a five-inning 20-1 run-rule win.

Sam Holdmeyer led the Tigers with a grand slam home run that cleared the left/center field fence with room to spare in the first inning.

Charlie Burk pitched four innings of three-hit ball and Josh Thomas came in to get the final three outs in the shortened 10-run mercy-rule game.

Cornersville managed singles by Conner McVey, Wesley Pigg, and Riley Gillit and McVey accounted for the only run for the Bulldogs.

Luke Terry added a base on balls for the Bulldogs.

The game was one of those that Cornersville coach Ben Putman and his charges would just as well forget as balls fell just beyond the reaches of the outfielders and other miscues enabled Tiger runners to scamper around the base paths.

One bright spot for the Bulldogs is the play of number 22, Luke Terry.

If you have not heard the story of Luke Terry, you must have been living in a cave, as his name has been on the national sporting news for the better part of four years.

Briefly, Luke lost his right arm to an infection when he was a baby and he grew up having to do everything with one arm.

Through grit and determination he turned himself into a baseball player.

Terry catches the ball with the glove on his left hand, flips the ball into the air while discarding his glove, only to catch the ball and throw it wherever he chooses all in a motion that is every bit as fast as you and I can with two arms and hands.

Every person that sees him play is amazed.

To give you ample proof take for example Terry’s play for the past week’s games.

Terry played in five games, batted .300, drew seven walks, and scored five runs as the Bulldogs went 2-3 with back-to-back wins over the Culleoka Warriors.

He has been consistent for his entire senior year for the Bulldogs.

When he is at the plate, he is most selective of the pitches that he swings at and when he does swing, he does not get cheated as he puts his all into it and this enables him to hit the ball wherever he desires.

Asked about his philosophy of hitting, Terry said, “I just get in the (batting) cage and get a lot of work done. I try to go deep in the count and make the pitcher work, because the more he has to work the better the chance is he’s going to throw you a good pitch, one that you can wait back on.”

There you have it, simple to the point mindset….all the good hitters have this perspective.

Luke’s high school career is ending soon and if you have not seen him play, check the Cornersville High School web site for the remaining games and treat yourself to a chance to see a good baseball player play the game he loves.

This season has not been kind to Luke’s Bulldogs, but he and his teammates are determined, they do not give up and they play hard, just like Luke does.

His legacy is never give up, use your head for something other than a hat rack and play the game with every ounce of energy you can muster, never let adversity hold you back.

The Bulldogs traveled to Fayetteville on Tuesday evening for the second game of the series.
