The Forrest Lady Rockets needed a win after dropping two straight and they got in dramatic fashion Tuesday night at Chapel Hill when Alex Davenport knocked down a game-winning 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer for a 40-38 District 12-AA win.

Forrest (5-7, 2-1) has now won six consecutive home games over the Tigerettes (3-9, 1-2), who last won in Chapel Hill in 2010.

Davenport led the Lady Rockets in the scoring column with a career-high 15 points, including three 3-pointers with two of the long bombs coming in the overtime period.

“It feels great to do it (career high) against them, it’s always intense,” Davenport said. “We are always working on specific things because we know them so well, so no matter how good either team is, it’s always evenly matched.”

Macyn Kirby had eight points, Laura Mealer and Kinslee Inlow had six points apiece, and Addison Bunty rounded out the scoring for Forrest with five points.

Israel Hurt had a big night in the low post for the Tigerettes, scoring a game-high 17 points, while Kayla Keiler scored eight, Karlye Wiser had a pair of 3-pointers for six points, Dionna Crutcher had five points, and Demiyah Blackman added a deuce.

The intra-county rivalry contest was close the entire way in a stellar defensive effort by both teams.

Inlow drained a 3-pointer to get things going before the Tigerettes reeled off nine straight points, culminating with a Hurt bucket in the low post.

Davenport halted the run with a 3-pointer and made one free throw moments later to cut the MCHS lead to two points.

A couple of possessions later, Kirby drilled a 3-pointer to retake the lead, but Wiser had other ideas when she drained a long three-bomb to give Marshall County a 12-10 lead after the first period.

Forrest wasted little time with its comeback as they opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run that included a Bunty 3-pointer and a Mealer steal and score.

Both teams scored on their next two possessions in the one-point contest before Kirby drilled a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to give the Lady Rockets a 22-18 halftime lead.

Davenport scored the first two baskets in the third quarter on a pair of low post field goals and Hurt had three points before both teams went cold for several minutes as Forrest held a 26-21 lead when Inlow gave them their biggest lead of the game at 29-21 via a 3-pointer.

The Tigerettes dug in again as Hurt and Crutcher caught fire, scoring four points apiece to cut the Forrest lead to 31-27, entering the fourth quarter.

Marshall County had the edge to begin the final period as they cut the Forrest lead to one point on two occasions before taking a 34-33 lead on a Crutcher basket with 3:07 remaining in the contest.

They maintained the one-point lead for two more minutes until Davenport tied the game with one free throw at the 1:01 mark of the fourth period.

Both squads turned the ball over down the stretch and the game went to overtime, tied at 34.

There was no scoring until Davenport canned a 3-pointer out of a Forrest timeout with 2:34 left in overtime, but Hurt came up with a rebound and put-back for the Tigerettes at the other end.

A Forrest missed shot out of another timeout gave the ball back to the Tigerettes, who took the lead on a Keiler midrange jumper from the baseline with 40 seconds left in overtime.

Forrest turned the ball over out of a timeout, but got it back on an MCHS miscue.

After a timeout with 6.2 seconds left, the ball went to Davenport beyond the three-point line where she raised up and hit nothing but the bottom of the net for the game-winner.

“Coach was wanting a screen and Laura to come through the middle and kick to Kinslee, but Kinslee was cutoff and she gave it to me and I hit the three,” Davenport said. “I was ready, I was feeling pretty confident.”

“Coach Jessica (Preston) and I work on getting my feet set and ready and she told me in the locker room and that’s what I did, so we are working on it.”

Forrest will try to make it two in row when they entertain Nolensville (9-5, 2-1) Friday night while the Tigerettes host Murfreesboro Central Magnet (7-3, 2-1) for basketball homecoming at the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium in Lewisburg.

“We knew we had to give it our all this game, we worked on boxing out and I think we did well getting our rebounds,” Davenport said. “We just had to get our minds right.”
