Cornersville’s Garner picks UT-Southern

Posted

Before the end of the 2021-2022 school year, Cornersville senior Natalie Garner signed a letter of intent to continue her cheerleading career at UT-Southern during the upcoming 2022-2023 year.
“I’m super excited to get to work with key and become a Firehawk and get started,” she said.
While there were other schools in the mix when it came to making her college pick, when she met Firehawk cheer coach Keye Matthews and was able to tour the campus, Garner knew where she wanted to spend her college years.
“This one really stood out because I knew I wanted to stay close to home and cheer. When I met Keye (Matthews) and started doing clinics, I just knew,” Garner said.
Garner has been on the sidelines cheering for nearly a decade when she got her start cheering in Alabama.
“I started cheering when I was about 12 and I started doing competitive cheer for CheerVille Athletics in Athens, Alabama. My sophomore year, I started doing high school cheer and then I cheered all through my high school career and now I’m here,” she said.
Having cheered for the better part of a decade, Garner was part of plenty of special memories, but says just getting ready for games and hanging out with the cheer squad were among her favorites.
“Definitely the crazy girls and hanging out with them and practices—they made it so much fun before games and getting ready with them,” she said.
While her freshman season is still several months from getting underway, Garner hasn’t quite made up her mind in choosing a career path just yet.
“I’m not sure set, but it’s going to either be business or nursing, but I haven’t decided for sure yet,” she said.
