Bonner named head coach of the Tigerettes

When it came to finding a new coach to helm the Marshall County Tigerette softball program, the school's administration found their new coach by looking just down the road in Cornersville.

Former Cornersville middle coach Amy Bonner has been named head coach of theTigerette program and brings a vision for building the program from the ground up.

“I'm really excited. I feel like it will be a good fit. I have a lot of good background, knowledge and experience. As far as for me, I want to build a consistently competitive program,” Bonner said.

For Bonner, her background as a pitcher will help establish the foundation, which she says starts and ends with the pitcher-catcher relationship.

“I want it to be a respected program so when schools play us, they know they're going up against a solid team. That's been my goal, to establish that foundation and build on that.”

Bonner has been a student of the game for her entire life, having played throughout her school years and into college at Milligan University.

“I played softball since I was six or seven years old. I played through high school and had a scholarship and played at Miligan University. I was a pitcher there,” she said.

After her playing career came to an end, Bonner took a break from the sport until opportunity came knocking at Cornersville Middle where she has been the head coach for the past four seasons.

While she's originally from Illinois, Bonner says the community and county support for athletics within Marshall County are overwhelming and a key component to the success of scholastic athletics.

“I think one of the things I've enjoyed about being in this county in particular, there is so much support from the staff, from the community and businesses. To me, that's really nice having the support from the community,” she said.

Within the support of the coaching staff, there's plenty of coaching and playing experience that can help build the Tigerettes' foundation.

“We have a staff of four coaches this year, which I am super excited about. I think between all of our experience, I've been a pitcher, my other coach has been a pitcher and the other two have been pitching coaches. When you get pitching and catching that's solid, you have a really good foundation to build on. Between all of our knowledge, we should be solid,” she said.

While it's been a late start to the summer, Bonner held team tryouts earlier this week and plans on getting some practice days in to evaluate the players who will be on the field this season.

Once the summer work is done, the program will transition to fall ball practices and workouts to prepare for the 2022 spring season.

At the end of the day, Bonner hopes to not only build the program into a yearly contender, but also help her players grow into successful student-athletes.

“I think that softball for me, has been character building. As a player, you have to learn how to be resilient in times you struggle. You have to have discipline to be good at what you do,” she said.

“On the coaching end, there are so many things about how do I coach these young women how to be disciplined, how to hold themselves accountable and learn how to prevail through those trials and struggles. For me, it's been a lot about character building.”
